Chunky Girl Comics at Wizard World San Jose

Labor Day weekend, I had the pleasure of once again donning the Candy costume and joining my fellow Chunky Girls (and boy) for a panel discussion at Wizard World in San Jose.

Although we knew our body diversity panel was set to be the first discussion of the day, when Marisa and I turned to corner to our room, and saw it was already full of people, we backed out, believing we had accidentally walked into the end of a previous panel.  We sat outside for a few minutes, then looked at the sign again, which reminded us that we were first up that day.  Holy shit, all those people were there...waiting...for us!  We peeked around the corner, noticed the panel table was empty and our name tents were there, so we sheepishly walked into the room and took our places.

The panel was fantastic!  I realize I am a nerd-in-training, and so some of the conversation was over my head, but the discussion was not only about diversity in body type but also in race (both in comics and movies).  It could very easily been an uncomfortable or heated conversation but everyone was extremely respectful and I felt like it was very productive.

I would like to (once again) thank Marisa of Chunky Girl Comics for including me on these awesome adventures, Gia for being reliable and fun-sized, and Ray of Tragic Hero Comics for being our Chunky Boy nerd in the know.  His knowledge of comics always impresses me.

After the panel, we stayed to sign autographs and take photos.  Again, we were so surprised and humbled by the number of people willing to wait to talk to us.  It was just such a great day and an amazing experience.  Of course, there were plenty of shenanigans, including celebrity stalking and planned debauchery (which really didn't go down as I had hoped).

On Sunday, we headed into Wizard World one last time before leaving for the weekend,  We happened past Josh McDermitt and Michael Cudlitz from The Walking Dead in the hotel lobby.  Marisa and I stood just close enough (but we thought, just far enough away), trying to decide whether we should say hi.  Suddenly, we hear one of them say loudly (pretty sure it was Josh): "And then I killed a goat and spread its blood all over my body!"  Soooooooo, we left.  The bonus was Marisa got to meet Dean Cain (of Superman fame) at Peet's two seconds later.  We still should have gone over to talk to TWD dudes!

As always, pictures speak louder than words, so enjoy a few photos of our adventures from that weekend.  We are very much looking forward to Wizard World Reno in November!

Chunky Girls at ConVolution

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of being invited to ConVolution in San Francisco to speak on a panel with the other girls from Chunky Girl Comics.  Definitely not the "normal" nerd convention that I am used to, ConVolution was a lot more sci-fi, but it was still a lot of fun.

On Saturday, Marisa and I headed a panel called: Fierce, Fab and Fluffy: Women and Body Image in Comics, Cosplay and Pop Culture.

We were nervous.  Would anyone show up?  Who wants to hear us talk about being chubby?  Our back-up plan was to turn on music and booty shake for an hour and a half, if necessary.  It turned out, we had nothing to worry about.  We had a great group of ladies (and one gentleman), and we had a conversation about a whole bunch of things.  We discussed our personal body issues.  We discussed Chunky Girl Comics and the importance of seeing diverse bodies in the world.  We even discussed health issues and how you can address "food issues" without making them "fat issues" (because, let's be honest, a lot of the food in this country is lacking nutrients; and skinny people are eating the same crappy food as larger people).

I did video the entire 90-minute event and still need to figure out how best to break that down into smaller video clips.  In the meantime, I wanted to thank ConVolution and Chunky Girl Comics for inviting me to be part of the event and I am looking forward to doing it again!  Until the video is ready, please enjoy a couple photos from the day.

Chunky Girl Comics at Big Wow Comicfest 2014

I attended Big Wow Comicfest with the ladies of Chunky Girl Comics on Saturday, May 16.  What a fun event!!!!  As usual, it seems like a picture is worth a thousand words, so I will tell the story with photos!

Comikaze 2013 - From the Perspective of a Nerd-in-Training

I am a nerd-in-training.  I went...to a comic book convention.  Voluntarily.  And, although I know I didn't "get" half the references, I had SO MUCH FUN.  Only in its third year, Stan Lee's Comikaze boasted 50,000 attendees (I think about half of what San Diego's Comic-Con supposedly gets).  I heard many attendees and vendors say they liked the "smaller" show.  Sure, if 50,000 people is small.

One thing I noticed about this (and probably many other comic book conventions) is that it is less about comic books and more about pop culture.  Sharknado panel?  Did Sharknado start from a comic book?  And could Ian Ziering have looked any more angry that he was up there on that stage?  They didn't make an appearance at this event, but Supernatural?  Hey, I LOVE the show, but did they start from a comic book?  Anyway, so it is fitting that Comikaze's subtitle is: Where pop culture rules the earth.

I went to Comikaze with my girls from Chunky Girl Comics, and I had a blast.  I got to meet some celebrities.  I got to play around in costume and take tons of photos.  I got to walk around and meet people and buy cool products.  I really had a fun time.  I stayed in the Figueroa Hotel, which has a really cool Mediterranean theme, and was within walking distance of the Convention Center.  Since I was alone, they upgraded me to a huge room.  Marisa's birthday was on Saturday, so we celebrated with cupcakes from Sprinkles and went to a Day of the Dead concert.  I got to try aerial yoga at Aeriform Arts (I have a Poletry in Motion on that soon).  And, since I was in Los Angeles, I stuck around for California Pole Dance Championship (again, I'll have a separate post on that later).

Since a picture speaks a thousand words, enjoy my photo journal of my nerd adventures!
