Instructor Spotlight on Ellen Lovelace!

I had heard of Ellen Lovelace many times before I actually met her at a Poletential event. She is an amazing dancer and instructor, and she makes me giggle. I loved the hammocks class I took with her last weekend. Here is Ellen!

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I’ve done machine Pilates for about 5 years, twice a week. I pole 3 to 4 days a week. I usually take an aerial yoga class once a week, and now am teaching one about once a week as well. And, due to my unfortunate litany of injuries, I have a whole routine of at-home PT exercises that I do in one form or another almost every night.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I try to always eat a variety from the major food groups: bread, pasta, cookies, and bagels. ;-) I’m allergic to dairy and eggs, and I choose not to eat pork or beef…so I’m kind of like a vegan who eats chicken and fish. In all seriousness, I’ve tried eating low-carb high-protein tons of fruits and veggies, and it just makes me gain weight and feel hungry all the time. So I eat what I want, but in moderation.

Do you have a dance background?

Not formally, no. I’ve always danced in one form or another, starting as a Madonna impersonator in my bedroom, then cheerleading and musical theater, leading up to sensual dance and pole. But not formally trained.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

No, I don’t. This past summer I actually pushed myself WAY outside my box, and submitted an entry to the Masters (40+) division for the Midwest Pole Championship. I was so incredibly honored and blown away to be chosen by the judges to be one of the 6 competitors! However, due to many reasons, including a crazy summer schedule and a shoulder injury, I had to decline. In hindsight, I’m really glad I entered, but I know I made the right choice for me, and won’t be entering any more competitions. I pole because I love it, and that’s all the validation I need.

Do you teach pole classes? If so, where?

Yes! I teach at Poletential in Redwood City , CA . It’s a great studio with a non-competitive atmosphere full of fun women who pole for the joy of it. I teach a few different things, from choreographed dances to intensive clinics (invert, floorwork, etc.) to pure hard tricks-based classes.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I love both, but if I had to pick only one to do forever, it would have to be dancing. I think my joints would prefer that choice, as well.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

To each his or her own. There’s room for all forms of expression. I just don’t like it when people are adamant about one over the other.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Usually, just clean hands and pole are all I use. If I am trying something brand-new super-scary that requires a lot of grip and don’t want to worry about sliding, I use a quick shot of Firm Grip. Our studio poles are 50mm so sometimes it helps to stick your hands in place!

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

Since I discovered Aveeno Daily Moisturizing lotion, I haven’t had dry skin in years! I apply it every day—it leaves you moist and slightly sticky, so it’s perfect for pole. On non-pole days, I hydrate deeply with Kiehl’s Crème de Corps.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I wear a ton of pole tanks from our studio and others. Unfortunately, all the tiny cute pole and yoga tops are not made for my “girls”, so I wear great bras from Champion. And I am eternally on the hunt for the perfect pole shorts. Still haven’t found them!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Both. I tend to go in cycles of one more than the other. I need to get better about making myself practice tricks in heels.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

It’s everything I love about any form of dance: losing yourself in the music and movement. Plus, the challenge of integrating tricks in a way that the dance never stops. That’s what motivates me--how can I make this seamless and pretty?

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

So many come to mind! But I guess the two songs that will always get me up and moving are Slow Dancing in a Burning Room by John Mayer and The Way I Are by Timbaland. Totally schizophrenic, I know!

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio(s)?

I’m 41, and until I touched a pole 4 years ago I was pretty much an out-of-shape couch potato. Pole has transformed my life and self-confidence, and made me appreciate what my body can do for me. The bruises, calluses, and injuries are all just proof that I’ve turned my body into a tool that can achieve some pretty awesome things!

Studio Spotlight: Dance 411!

I've been chatting with Melanie, general manager of Dance 411 Studio in Atlanta, Georgia.  The studio offers a range of classes for both children and adults.  Welcome Dance 411 to our circle!

What is your fitness background?

I started out as a competitive gymnast when I was 8 and started taking ballet when I was about 10.  I started doing competitive figure skating after all of that for some years and I still skate and tumble for fun.  In high school I rode horses, ran track, played basketball, and played lacrosse.  I also danced heavily throughout (modern, ballet, jazz).  I was recruited to play lacrosse in college.  About 10 years ago I got into Capoeira (Brazilian martial art) and I still do that also.  I’ve tinkered with kickboxing even!  Then I got into Pole Dance (my most recent fitness pickup) about 4 years ago.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

For pole, I take as many classes as I can.  At our studio, I take Pole Fitness, Disco Pole, and a few others.  We also have a Go-go Stiletto class and a Lap Dance class which I love!  And I like to get down in Shake it Up!  We learn to shake it and make the booty clap!  J  Super Fun!  Off the pole and outside of the Ladies Liberation classes at the studio, I run, still tumble at a local gymnastics studio, and dance on my own (mostly lyrical and modern with some hip hop mixed in).  When it’s warm outside, of COURSE I love to hit the pool and the beach!

What kind of diet do you follow?

I have always been a pretty healthy eater.  I eat A LOT of fruit.  People in the studio make fun of me, but it’s just the way I am.  I have always preferred fruit over candy…even as a child.  I also try to eat out as little as possible and make most of my own meals.  If I do eat out, it’s usually sushi which is still pretty healthy.  I like to eat a lot of green veggies like kale and spinach.  And, I drink a lot of water.  I hardly ever drink sodas or even juice.  Again, I have been like that since I was a kid.  My one forbidden fruit, so to speak, is definitely French fries.  Those are my guilty pleasure!

Do you have a dance background?

Yes, definitely.  I started in ballet at about 10 years old to help me with gymnastics.  I kept up with ballet and started some leisurely hip hop classes while in junior high school.  In high school I was in various dance groups.  Once I went to college, I did mostly recreational dance and dance classes and got out of performing for a while since I was so heavy into lacrosse and busy with various activities.  I have always taken classes here or there, but started back consistently about 4 or 5 years ago when I started doing belly dance.  Then I found pole dancing shortly afterward and stayed with that.  It got me back into dance with a vengeance!

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

No, but who knows…maybe one day.  Those women are amazing, aren’t they?

What interested you about pole dancing?

It was something different.  As you can see in my fitness background, I have tried nearly everything at least once to stay in shape.  I felt like pole was something that interested me because it added a little something extra and wasn’t just another dance class.  I like that pole dancing includes upper body work since most dance forms do not do this.  And, who doesn’t love learning all those amazing tricks?!

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I think I really like both equally.  I love being able to take pole fitness and pole dancing classes back to back.  I can get my cardio workout in the fitness class and dance in sneakers if I want to.  Then I can strap on my stilettos and really work the moves in a pole dancing class.  It’s a good balance.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I like to use DryHands.  It seems to work the best for me.  And, it helps when I remember to NOT put on lotion before class!  LOL!

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

Sometimes I forget and put lotion on, and that is no good.  Talk about a slippery slope!  But, I just wear pants and go about my business.  I might put lotion on my hands, though, because I really can’t stand dry hands.  I just make sure to wash my hands thoroughly a couple times before I go into class to get all the lotion off.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I like to buy them at Ross and TJ Maxx honestly.  I can find really good deals and really sexy clothing (and shoes!).  But, if I’m looking for something special I will go into a “Ladies” shop or browse some online shops.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I feel more comfortable dancing in general barefoot.  But, for the pole I like dancing in heels because it really gets me in the mood for pole.  I don’t know, there is just something that changes in me when I put on a pair of really hot shoes!

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I didn’t actually open this studio, Sindy did.  But ironically both of us were in corporate America before doing this.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

It just seemed to fit.  Dance 411 started out as a newsletter to give Atlanta a good overview of dance that was available in the area.  It literally gave people the 4-1-1.  Then the newsletter was expanded to actually offering  classes with top instructors wherever space could be found.  It has grown and grown into the Dance 411 Studios you see today.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

I love to learn something new and I really, REALLY love to spin.  That is my favorite thing to do, even in figure skating.  I just love also that I can spin while looking really good.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I really like Motivation by Kelly Rowland (featuring Little Wayne) right now, but honestly Blow The Whistle By Too Short is always a favorite.

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

Studio Spotlight: Shirley of The Studio -- Pole Dance Aotearoa

Shirley is a Facebook friend.  When I first asked her to be in my blog, I sent her the Power of Pole questions.  But now I realize she's a studio owner so I am calling this a Studio Spotlight!  It's a bit of a mix of the two -- so here's a Power of the Pole Studio Spotlight!  :-)

How long have you been pole dancing?
4 years as at 17 October (is it really that long???)

What first drew you to try it?
My recruitment agent/ friend said she did it and I thought it sounded like fun

Where do you take classes?
At my own Studio, The Studio - Pole Dance Aotearoa [http://www.polefitness.net.nz/] and with Bonnie Black from Vertical Aerial Dance [http://www.vadpole.co.nz/] in Dunedin whenever she's up in Wellington.  She's a tough mistress!

Do you have a pole at home?
Not anymore... I have 11 to play with at The Studio  :O)

How often do you pole?
6 - 15 hours p/w, Friday and Sunday are rest days and I get the odd Tuesday.

What else do you do to keep your body in shape to pole?

A functional fitness strength class each week, which we call Vertical strength.  This is run by a friend who is an amazing fitness professional and has designed this class for pole dancers to gain strength.  She also takes monthly splits workshops for us too.  Other than that, nothing but pole.

Do you like to dance in shoes or barefoot?
Barefoot is preferred.

How do you deal with dry skin on pole days and on off-pole days?
Aveeno moisturing cream in the morning does the trick all year round.  On really bad days (winter), I've been known to wax a pole to get grip.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?
Skin!

Where do you buy your pole clothes?

At chain stores  Usually leggings that are heading to "legging heaven" get cut down at mid thigh and turned into pole clothes and I just purchase singlets from chain stores.

What is your favorite song to dance to right now?
It depends on the mood - Krezip "It's probably me" is one I'm working on as a routine; the Roxanne Tango from Moulin Rouge and a pile of others, including classical.

How do you feel like pole has improved or changed your life?

I've dropped a lot of fat, I get enamoured with my biceps (justifiably so too) and I'm a lot healthier and stronger than when I started.  I'm also a lot less concerned about my body image and my self-esteem has improved: so what if I have a wobbly belly or cellulite, I can hang upside down by one knee and do oblique sit ups off the pole... which is more than a lot of people can do.

Star Spotlight on Kelly Yvonne!

I am starting to make connections between people I've seen on Facebook and people I'm meeting in real life.  At the CPDC, I was standing in line near a woman that I recognized, but couldn't place.  I later realized she was Kelly Yvonne -- famed pole dance choreographer!  I heard later that Kelly had actually choreographed some of the routines for the competition.  When I initially connected with Kelly on Facebook and Twitter, I was intrigued, not only because she was a pole dancer but because she was from Berkeley (which is local to me).  I have asked her to join our pole sisterhood -- so this is Kelly Yvonne!!

What is your fitness background?

I am a classically trained, competitive dancer. I competed nationally in high school and danced/choreographed for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers dance teams.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I train on the pole between 6-10 hours per week and I work on flexibility a minimum of 2 hours per week. This month I will start strength and conditioning with Amber Richard in her Rock Hard Body class at The Choreography House. I also take and/or a variety of dance classes for cardio.

What kind of diet do you follow?

My diet is horrible! With my crazy schedule, I drink coffee all day and eat when I can. *hangs head in shame*

Do you have a dance background?

I have been dancing (informally) since birth, according to my mother. I began my formal training in jazz and hip hop at the age of 12. I competed nationally in high school and was a member of the dance team at the University of California, Berkeley. I also danced in the NBA for 3 consecutive seasons.
When I moved to Los Angeles in 2003 I was selected to be a scholarship student at Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio where I trained intensely in ballet, jazz, hip hop, african, salsa, tap, jazz-funk, etc.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I have participated in almost every major local and national competition for the last year as a choreographer. I began working with Natasha Wang and helped her win 1st place titles at 2010 East Meets West, 2010 California Pole Dance Championship; 2010 USPDF West Coast Championship and 2011 USPDF National Championship.

I have also choreographed for athletes that competed in the 2011 California Pole Dance Championship (including Jennifer Kim; 2nd place, Most Entertaining, Most Artistic Nadia Shariff); 2011 Great Mid-West Pole Dance Championship (2nd place Charley Crystal and 3rd place Emiko Jaffe); 2011 Miss South Carolina (1st place title Karri Telford); 2011 Miss Texas Pole Dance Championship (Sarah Marsh); and 2011 American Pole Fitness Association Championship (Faith Daniels and Laura Martin).

I do plan to compete some day but for now, I love creating concepts and providing choreography for these amazing athletes!

What interested you about pole dancing?

I was initially attracted to pole dance for the fitness potential and a desire to get reacquainted with my femininity after a horrible break up. Pole dancing inadvertently revived my dance career as I had “retired” from this pursuit in 2005.

Consequently, I created and launched Girl Next Door - a pole dance soirée after only 3 months of pole training because I wanted to develop my pole performance abilities while learning how to pole dance!

Do you have any pole dance heroes?

My pole dance hero is Natasha Wang. She auditioned for my show, Girl Next Door - a pole dance soirée, in January 2010 and was selected because of her beautiful lines and unique movement articulation. She and I began collaborating to continue developing her “pole voice” shortly thereafter and now she is the current USPDF National Champion. I have watched (and aided) in her evolution and I am so proud of her diligence in continually pushing to take her skill to the next level. She’s my hero and friend and I am so proud of all of her success - SUCH an inspiration!

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

Due to my dance background, I prefer pole dancing but appreciate the fitness aspects. Honestly, I think the two are one in the same because, either way, you’re getting a great workout!

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

I believe the difference between exotic dance and artistic/fitness pole dance is the intention behind the movement. Exotic dancing is performed to entice patrons in adult entertainment. Artistic/Fitness Pole Dancing is also performed for the purpose of entertainment but tends to ignite a wider range of reactions, from fear to humor to reflection to arousal.

I do embrace this correlation and recognize that the majority of public exposure to pole dance has been in the erotic dance genre. As a result, the purpose of the Girl Next Door - a pole dance soirée shows is to demonstrate the range of pole dance as a performance apparatus, which includes both exotic and artistic/fitness forms of expression.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I use Dry Hands.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I have extremely dry skin, so I actually use lotion in the morning on pole days. When I pole in the morning, I use lotion the night before.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

The majority of my pole clothes are hand-me-downs from Natasha Wang and Jennifer Kim! Whenever they buy something that doesn’t fit, they give it to me! :)

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I love to wear the heels, but I prefer to dance barefoot.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

Before opening The Choreography House, I was/am the creator, director and producer of Girl Next Door - a pole dance soirée and was just beginning to provide choreography for a number of pole dance athletes preparing for competition. I opened the studio to have a place to rehearse with my cast and choreograph for athletes.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

The Choreography House name is a combination of the purposes for the space. “Choreography” because I spend most of my time choreographing routines for shows, competitions and events. “House” is in reference to “Girl Next Door” as it is the official ‘home’ for the cast to train, rehearse and prepare for performances.

What profession were you doing before pole dancing?

I majored in architecture in college and was working in the construction management industry for several years after graduation. Currently I work for an architecture consulting firm that provides business management services for the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

In my spare time, after I “retired” from dance, I worked in production and public relations for a number live shows including a french-style cabaret, a rock opera, musical theater, etc. Shortly after discovering pole dance, I created Girl Next Door - a pole dance soirée, the longest running pole dance revue in the nation.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

My favorite thing about dancing on the pole is helping the public see that it is a completely unexplored apparatus for creative expression. Each time I perform, each show I produce and each routine I choreograph, my goal is to help the audience see what I see.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues by Elton John

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

Girl Next Door  - a pole dance soirée: The first Sunday of each month! Next event: Sunday, November 6th

Hide and Seek - a pole dance speakeasy - PREMIERE: Friday, October 14th

www.girlnextdoorshow.com  *shameless plug*

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

I just want to thank the pole community for being so welcoming and gracious. I’ve only been poling since 2009 and, since then, I’ve met some of the most creative, talented, friendly and generous people on the planet! This sport/hobby attracts people from all walks of life and it’s so beautiful to make a new pole friend in person or virtually. Like anything, it has it’s lows but OVERALL I’ve had a blast and I want to thank all my pole sisters for an amazing LIFE CHANGING two years!

Kelly Yvonne is one busy lady!  I am planning to head back down to Southern California to catch Girl Next Door VERY soon!  Please connect with her here:

Studio Spotlight: Empowerment Through Exotic Dance!

I first started hearing whispers about Mary Ellyn and Empowerment Through Exotic Dance as the Grande Dames (pole dancers over 40) were getting excited about The Midwest Pole Dance Competition earlier this year.  I wanted to include her in our circle of pole sisters, so here she is!

What is your fitness background?

I have a group exercise certification through AFAA.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

Off the pole I work out 5-7 days per week...about 30 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training and 45 minutes of stretching each session. On the pole I teach 12 hours a week plus choreograph and practice outside of classes.

What kind of diet do you follow?

Mostly low carb dieting.

Do you have a dance background?

Never took any serious dance lessons. Started at Fred Astaire once and dropped out after a couple of weeks.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I don't compete but this year we launched the Midwest Pole Dance Competition in August.

What interested you about pole dancing?

The fun mixed with the fabulous support among the women (and now men) in classes.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

Not really though I tend to personally lean toward using the term pole dancing. Even the fitness aspect has a dance element to it and all dance is a form of fitness.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

I think it's ridiculous. There is no denying that at least a portion of our pole moves are rooted in the stripper industry and there is no shame in a woman's sensuality. I don't endorse the side of the industry which exploits women but I also support a woman's choice to work in any field she wishes. While I understand that pole dancing in it's earliest form was Mallakhamb and Chinese pole, I don't believe that the modern pole dance school started up because of Mallakhamb! I was around when pole dancing burst into mainstream and we had never even heard of Mallakhamb at that time!

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Grrrip...and yes that is spelled correctly. I prefer the spray but they have a lotion for sweaty hands too. The spray helps with mild sweating and adds just a touch of grip but you can still spin without sticking too much.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I love Pole Physics!  Plus I exfoliate daily!

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love Mika Yoga Wear and AMB shorts.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Mostly in bare feet as I teach in bare feet so that is what I'm use to. However if I'm dressed up and out dancing I prefer 6-inch heels.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I was a registered nurse in ER/Trauma

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

Brainstorming with my husband...though I never really cared for how long it is!

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

Beautiful spins can take my breath away.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Simple Man by Deftones.

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

The Great Midwest Pole Dance Competition and Convention 2012 due to be held in August. More information will be available soon at www.MidwestPoleDancing.com.

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

We offer online teacher training and live instructor certification courses sanctioned by the Pole Fitness Association and The Pole Dance Community as well as approved for CEUs by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. Check www.PoleDancerCertification.com for more information.

Studio Spotlight: Poletential!

I first heard about Poletential when I started going to Twirly Girls almost two years ago.  Since both studios are in the Bay Area, it was assumed that they are fierce competitors.  However, they are almost an hour apart, so there really is no reason to feel this way.  I started seeing awesome photos with pretty backgrounds on Facebook from their studio.  I heard about the lovely Amber Richard (who also teaches at BeSpun in Hollywood when she's going to school), who is another tall pole dancer.  Poletential seemed like a cool pole studio, just like my Twirly Girls!

Earlier this year, I attended the Air Show at a club in Redwood City.  I later saw on Facebook that one of their girls was battling breast cancer.  I joined the Team Pink Tracey Facebook group and learned that they are having a fundraiser to support Tracey.  Like any other studio, they are a family and they are supportive of their family.  I love hearing good things about other studios!

Rita and I are planning to attend the Zumba Fundraiser this month and are excited to try the silks hammock class next month at Poletential.

Anyway, here are co-owners Christina and Pam from Poletential, who are joining our pole circle!

What is your fitness background?

Christina: I was a fast-pitch softball pitcher when I was younger, I worked 80 hour weeks during most of the 80's and 90's so there was very little fitness. I finally found Pilates after retiring from High Tech in 1999 and was hooked. I also love trying new things like cycling, surfing, kayaking...etc.

Pam:  I was a gymnast for 10 years and after several injuries I hung up my leotard.  I didn't do much in my 20's other than sleep and watch TV and it wasn't until I was in my 30's when a co-worker dragged me to a Pilates class that I started a regular fitness routine.  Now that I'm in my 40's I'll try anything that involves adrenaline, specifically climbing things!

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

Christina: I incorporate Pilates into all the classes that I teach so that I make sure to get it in for myself. Most of my routine includes teaching, teaching and teaching.

Pam:  It's not what I wish it was.  I work a 40 hour a week job that requires me to travel 50% of the time and I have 2 young children.  All my fitness is on a pole or a piece of fabric.

What kind of diet do you follow?

Christina: I just lost a ton of weight following a very low calorie, lean protein and pretty much no carb diet. I'm still trying to follow it, but with a bit more cheating.

Pam:  No specific diet.  I would be happy eating only bread and cheese every single day.

Do you have a dance background?

Christina: Ha, ha, ha. No. I'm a dancer wanna-be.

Pam:  Ditto to what Christina said.  Just the question makes me giggle.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

Christina: Not until they have an over 45 and tires easily division.

Pam:  No competing for me but I really enjoy attending the different competitions.

What interested you about pole dancing?

Christina: I love the combination of expression and strength. It is the only time my brain turns off and I'm in the moment.

Pam:  I started pole dancing a few months after having my son and it made me feel confident again and whipped my bootie back into shape.  I was instantly hooked.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

Christina: It all depends on the conversation. We do both.

Pam:  I consider them both forms of fitness whether I'm in bare feet with all the lights on or wearing 6" stiletto's with the lights off.  I love them both.

What do you think about the stripper vs. fitness debate?

Christina: Not sure. I guess I don't really understand the "debate"

Pam:  Can you bust into a Superman? Not sure what the "debate" is about?

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Christina: Sheer will.

Pam:  I don't use any type of grip aide.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Christina: Both!

Pam:  Both, and add quad skates to the mix for me!

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

Christina: Feeling sorry for myself because I had retired from High Tech and didn't know what to do next.

Pam:  I am an event planner which is still my full time job.  Poletential is my passion and my sanctuary.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

Christina: It popped into my head as a "code name". Typical of High Tech where we put a code name on a project. I told Pam, here is what we can use until we have a name. It stuck. She came up with the "Fitness with a Twirl" part of it!

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

Christina: The feeling of letting go.

Pam:  It's all about me!

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Christina: It is always based on my next "performance" and that is a secret.

Pam:  Johnny Cash's "Hurt" was, is and always will be my favorite.

Studio Spotlight: Studio Jasmine!

Here is another Twitter friend to add to our ever-widening pole dancing circle (I can actually see little poles with dancers on them across a map of the world...maybe someone can create a logo!!):  This is Jasmine Grace!

What is your fitness background?

I figure skated about 3-4 times a week growing up. I was on a synchronized ice-skating team for 6 years and we disbanded when everyone went off to college. After I quit skating I didn’t follow any fitness routine at all and slowly gained 40 lbs over 4 years time. Then I found pole dancing! It has transformed my body and it is helping me to get into the best shape of my life.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I try to pole dance 2-3 times a week. I am working yoga and pilates into my fitness routine about twice a week as well. I do a short yoga session before bed when I have the time. It really helps relax my back muscles for a better nights sleep.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I’m really bad about what I eat. I don’t eat very healthy at all to be honest so I rely mostly on portion control. I eat a few small meals throughout the day when I am hungry.

Do you have a dance background?

I have no dance background. I have never taken a dance class in my life but like I said before I figure skated for quite some time so it did have its benefits.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I have never entered a pole competition before. I just started out about a year and half ago and I have tremendous stage fright. When I was younger, I never once skated solo in a competition. I always competed with my team, which consisted of about 15-20 girls. I am still working up the courage to dance in a pole competition. Maybe next year at the pole convention?

What interested you about pole dancing?

At first, I just wanted to learn to dance around the pole and do a few spins for my husband. When I went to youtube to find some moves to learn I found a whole community of people using it as an apparatus to do gravity defying stunts that looked literally impossible to execute. I kept thinking to myself, how are they doing that? And with such grace? I was hooked from that day on! I have been teaching myself from youtube ever since!

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I don’t really have a preference, but I do find myself using the term pole dancing more often. I think it describes my style more. I don’t just do it for the fitness aspect. I like creating a lyrical dance.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

Dancing is dancing and talent is talent! It really all depends on the approach and the demeanor of the dancer.  I think pole dancing has roots everywhere. It is hard to pin point it and say that it came from one specific place. Every country approaches pole dancing differently, some countries very differently, and other countries only slightly. I think we should remain more focused on where pole dancing is headed versus where it has been!

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I have not experimented with any product yet. It is on my to do list. I’m really interested in trying itac2.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I don’t get dry skin that much. I just use a little bit of lotion on my off pole days. I never use lotion on the days when I am on the pole.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love Bad Kitty Exoticwear, especially their Pole Fit collection! I’m about to buy an outfit from PoleSkivvies to support a fellow poler. From what I have heard, I won’t be disappointed!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I prefer to dance barefoot. I think it is very sexy when pole dancers wear heels in their performances, but for everyday practicing it’s just not for me.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I recently just graduated in 2010 with a BFA in graphic design. I had a hard time finding a job after school, so I decided to spend some time designing an online pole studio for self-taught pole dancers, like myself.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

The name of my studio is Online Pole Studio, and it is simply that because I feel like my website is a giant online pole studio for everyone across the globe to instruct and share knowledge about pole dancing for no cost.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

I love the thrill! I never thought I would ever be hanging from the pole by just the skin of my leg. I always wanted to take gymnastics and dance classes growing up but the figure skating classes already broke the budget. It is hard to believe that buying my first pole would lead me to learning both.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

“You and I” by Lady Gaga

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

Online Pole Studio is a great instructional aid for self-taught pole dancers. It has a pole moves glossary divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced moves. There is also a photo gallery, videos section, FAQ section, members section, and a forum coming soon!

You can sign up for a membership at Online Pole Studio for free at this web address: http://www.onlinepolestudio.com
Upon signing up you can create a profile, add friends, upload photos, connect your YouTube channel, and socialize with other pole dancers!

Studio Spotlight: Embody Pole Fitness!

Our pole circle widens as we welcome another Twitter friend, Diana, and her studio, Embody Pole Fitness to the fold!

What is your fitness background?

I have been an athlete since my early 20’s, when I began long distance trail running. I am also an avid hiker. I’ve hiked Mt. Whitney twice and Mt. Langley. I began weight lifting 6 years ago and am currently training to compete in the Iron Man Fitness Competition in January. I found pole dancing, through a friend 3 years ago and became instantly smitten. It is by far the most challenging  and exhilarating workout I have ever participated in.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I train on the pole 2-3 days a week, about 2 hours at a time. I also teach 8 pole classes a week at Embody Pole Fitness. I attend all the workshops I possibly can to learn and improve my technique and skills. I run 45 minutes, 4-5 days a week and lift weights twice a week. I also teach Kettlebell and ChickFit Fitness bootcamps at Embody, and since I’m one of those instructors that participate, I get an amazing workout with the students.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I am very strict with my diet, more so now that I am training for the fitness competition. I believe that diet is 80% of how you look and feel. I eat 7 small meals a day, 2 of which are shakes, small portions, lots of vegetables, protein and very low carbs. I do allow myself one cheat meal a week, where I completely overindulge and become a huge glutton.

Do you have a dance background?

Actually, no I don’t, the dance part of pole has been the most challenging for me and also what I love and admire the most. Fortunately, I have the most amazing instructor and studio manager, Jackie Arriaga, who has a dance degree from Oregon State. She has traveled the world teaching and performing  lyrical, ballet, and jazz. She is generous with her knowledge and time, she has taught me so much, changing the way I move and the way I look at my body. I train very hard to improve my dance. I’ll be attending jazz dance classes in January and look forward to incorporating this knowledge into my pole dancing.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I have not had the courage to submit for a pole competition YET, but am feeling the bug. I’ll definitely be submitting this year. I will be competing in the Iron Man Fitness competition this year and look forward to the challenge.

What interested you about pole dancing?

The beauty of the movement. The first time a saw a girl on the pole, I was speechless with admiration, she took my breath away, she seemed to float and glide around the pole.  I wanted to move with that grace, confidence and fluidity. Once I began the journey there was no turning back, Pole really is addicting. Never, in my life, with the exception of motherhood, has any one thing changed me, as a person, as this journey of Pole Dancing has. I capitalize it because, to me, it is a living, breathing entity. Somewhere I go, when I’m sad, when I’m happy, when I think I can, and when I think I can’t.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I think people us the term Pole Fitness thinking it has less stigma attached to it, thereby is less threatening to your average woman. But realistically, it is dancing, a beautiful, creative, life altering form of dance. I think we should keep it that way. It makes me sad to think that the beauty of dance in pole would be diminished.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

I’ve never been involved in exotic dance, although I’ve been to dozens of strip clubs, I’m always taken by the sensual flow of movement exotic dancers have. In many ways I attempt to emulate their movements and incorporate them into my dance. Seriously, this whole pole movement started in the strip clubs and to say otherwise is false. I think it’s ridiculous and a huge waste of energy to dwell on it. There is beauty in all forms of dance.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Love, love, love Dry Hands and Dewpoint. I use Dewpoint on my body and Dry Hands on my hands. With this combination I’m transformed into Spiderwoman.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I grease up with tons of lotion at night, I also use a mixture of jojoba oil and grapeseed oil. I love aquaphore for my knees, elbows and the back of my knees. It helps so much with the chafing from all the leg hooks. I shower before classes, to remove any trace of oils and I Dewpoint up before I get on the pole.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love the clothes we develop and sell at Embody Pole Fitness, we’ve come out with our line of clothes, to be launched in December. I also love Mika Yoga and Bad Kitty, awesome quality and a great fit.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I love to dance barefoot the best, but force myself to wear heels. They make your legs look amazing and also protect your feet. I think it makes me a stronger pole dancer to dance in shoes, forcing me to compensate for the added weight, as well as forcing me to improve my balance.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I own an IT consulting business, where I do IT security, ethical hacking and network administration. I have been doing IT for 15 years. I wish, and hope in the near future to focus completely on my studio and dancing. Teaching is the most rewarding career I have ever had. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

To Embody something is to become part of, I believe once you begin the journey of pole dancing it becomes part of you and changes you as a person. To embody pole is to become part of an amazing movement.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

When I conquer a trick, combo or movement, that feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment, can make my week.  When I emotionally fall into a dance, really letting myself go, on move leading to the next, nothing compares.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Empty Sky by Simon Wilcox. My favorite songs are the ones I can attach an emotion to, a moment in my life where the emotions were overwhelming.

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

Iron Man Fitness Competition on January 27 at the LA Convention Center, come out and be our cheering section. As a Pole Dance instructor I am struck by the life altering changes that pole dancing brings out in women. I see it every day, over the weeks and months, the metamorphosis that occurs throughout their journey. Pole Dancing…a journey, can anyone who has not taken this journey really understand what this means? Explaining it to someone who has not begun the steps is like explaining a color to a blind person. The explanations are all images, feeling and they are different for everyone. It is red, hot, vibrant, liberating, humbling, inspiring, frustrating, joyous…but the first steps, those are the big ones. The first steps are the scary steps, where you put yourself out there, making yourself vulnerable to a room full of women you don’t know very well, if at all. Perhaps you see yourself, in what you believe to be a not so flattering light, thinking they see you this way as well, but really, unbeknownst to you, all of those women are cheering for you, wanting so badly for you to take the next step, knowing if you do, the treasure, in yourself, you will find. I watch, stunned and amazed, as I see women change and grow, strong successful women who would, when facing the pole become timid and fearful when the words “free dance” were uttered, flourish and become before my very eyes, self-actualized, assured, appreciating their bodies and their curves. In their powerful movements I see a deeper understanding of themselves. In their dance they have allowed themselves to become playful, graceful, mesmerizing, unique, and exhilarating.

Perhaps you see yourself, in what you believe to be a not so flattering light, thinking they see you this way as well, but really, unbeknownst to you, all of those women are cheering for you, wanting so badly for you to take the next step, knowing if you do, the treasure, in yourself, you will find. Allowing yourself to muddle through these awkward first steps is the greatest gift you will give yourself. Never, in my life, with the exception of motherhood, has any one thing changed me, as a person, as this journey of Pole Dancing has. I capitalize it because, to me, it is a living, breathing entity. The Gift of Pole Dancing

Pole dancing has recently been described, the world over, as the "latest fitness craze", although this is true, it is so much more. Indeed, pole dancing will tone your thighs, give you sexy defined arms and shoulders, and melt away muffin tops. That's not all it will give you, you will gain a precious gift, the gift of self-acceptance, confidence and love, for yourself. Dance, sensual music and movement changes the color of your world, gives you new, rosy glasses to view yourself through. As I think about the life changing gifts this sensual, astonishing dance has brought to women around the world, I wonder where it all began….

Pole dancing has been undeniably embedded into the cultural mindset as the foremost sensuous art, but the history of the practice today is somewhat of a mystery. Some point to the early European fertility rituals involving dancing around a large pole placed in the center of town called a Maypole for the day the ritual was celebrated, May 1st. Others point to African tribal rituals in which betrothed women would dance provocatively around a wooden phallus. The dance was designed to show their future husbands how they wanted to be made love to.

Some trace the traditions roots back to ancient China, where acrobats would perform death-defying stunts and hold mind-bending poses on metal poles. In an interesting parallel the Indian art of Mallakhamb involved an artful dance and acrobatics routine centered around a wooden pole. Though these routines weren't regularly erotic in nature, and most often performed by men, the influence of these skills orientated moves still eco in the modern pole dance.

In contemporary times pole dancing is often linked to the emergence of the so called "HoochiCoochi" dancers who performed with the travel circuses, performing their routines on the pole supporting the big top. These primitive routines quickly evolved though, and were soon the main feature at Go-Go bars and table dancing clubs from the 60's through the 80's. In a very short time frank eroticism just wouldn't cut it, as pole routines became more and more acrobatic and heavily focused on the skill of the dancer.

Today's pole dancing is a thing unto itself. Mixing the subtle arts of sensuality and the art of high-performance acrobatics, pole dancing has become one of the most challenging and rewarding ways attain the stunning body you've always dreamed of, while having more fun than lifting dumbbell could ever hope to be.

Dance Your Way to Sanity

Dancing has been with us since the dawn of civilization. It's something that comes to us naturally, an urge coming from the natural rhythms within our bodies. Dancing is good for you, and in ways that we are still learning about today. When you dance the larger problems of moving through life dissipate and all that is left is the movement of the dance. Dancing gets you fit; it burns calories, tightens muscle, and heightens the metabolism. It releases hormones that help the skin and give a lasting sense of wellbeing, and instills a palpable sense of confidence.

More than that, scientists have now found links between dancing and staving off Alzheimer's. Dancing develops procedural learning and concentration because dancing is a dynamic rather than repetitive physical activity and can link past memories to the present. Various aspects of a dance session, such as the music, exercise, and social components of dancing can improve autobiographical memory and reduce agitation, anxiety, delusions, and other behavioral symptoms in dementia of any severity, and more importantly are really fun. Dance awakens memories outside the dance session and helps patients find themselves again. A multisensory approach with different sounds, colors, and tangible objects further stimulates engagement and stimulation of participants.

Dance is something that takes us out of our own world and transports us to another, one of feeling and of rhythm. It keeps us young not only by what it does to our bodies, but by what it does to our hearts. In dancing you are ageless, the beat that you follow both keeping time and driving it away. Dancing is an art of body and soul, it speaks to us about who we are at our deeper levels and lets us be who it is we want to be. By dancing often what you develop is a youth that will follow you through your life.
