Liquid Motion at Kitty Kats Korner

Last weekend, I paid Kitty Kats Korner a visit to take a Liquid Motion doubles workshop.  Our instructor was the lovely Danielle Mayzes. Our gracious host, Sandra, who owns Kitty Kats Korner, is also a certified Liquid Motion instructor.

Ginger and I have been dancing together for awhile now.  Probably going on two years.  She has been a fan of Liquid Motion so often she incorporates that into our routines, but I had never taken any formal classes.  I remember being at Pole Convention in 2012 when the ladies of Liquid Motion performed (Jeni Janover Stephanie Skyy, Danielle Mayzes and Danielle Romano).  It was mesmerizing.  Bodies moving so fluidly, crossing paths without effort.  They would come together and move apart and sometimes you didn't know where one person started and the other ended.  It was sexy in a very sensual but non-stripper way (not that there's anything with dancing in the "stripper way").  I don't know how to explain it.  It was just different.  You can view that video HERE.

Anyway, Ginger said Liquid Motion was coming to town, so away we went!  Ginger did FOUR workshops on Saturday.  FOUR.  And they were each 90-120 minutes long.  She's a badass.  I did my regular class with Ellen in the morning, then came out just for the doubles workshop, which did last two hours.  I went straight to a massage (which was actually kind of brutal).  I could barely move the next day.

I think the assumption was that most people came with a partner or at least had someone there they knew well enough to bump and grind on and slither around on the ground with (there was one hetero couple who were super sexy to watch).  So, of course, the whole reason I was there was to dance with Ginger.  But before we even got started, there was a mention of switching partners.  We could opt out...but I didn't want to be the sissy baby.  So I said, OF COURSE I will dance with other partners!  Then I cried a little on the inside.

Now, part of why I love dancing with Ginger is because she doesn't judge me.  She doesn't judge my fat.  Or my ridiculous sweat (of which there is always a ton).  She doesn't care that I can't dance that well.  Ginger just accepts me.  And not many people do that.  So, for me to say, of course I'm cool switching partners, is also me forcing myself further outside of my comfort zone.  And that is why I'm there, right?

So, we begin class together.  Ginger and I.  We warm up.  We do some log rolls.  But the time comes when we are supposed to switch.  I see people pairing up.  And I'm like the kid at the playground who doesn't want to get picked last.  It was a really unnecessary vulnerable moment for me.  I see Brie sitting against the wall.  Brie isn't stressed about finding a partner.  I have always liked Brie.  She has always been nice to me and she exudes confidence.  I respect that.  So I crawled up...will you be my partner?  Brie says yes!  Score!  But here's where the fear sets in.  Will she be disgusted by my sweaty body?  We are rolling all over the floor together.  But she didn't miss a beat.  If it did bug her, she kindly didn't let it show.  She's closer to my height, and also has ginormous boobs like mine, so it was a good match.  Later, I got brave again and switched to April.  Again, slightly closer to my height with boobs.  And so I got to fly in some moves that I could have only based before.  For the record, April is as freaking strong as an ox.  I kept worrying that I was going to squish her but she never failed me.  I have to admit, I did drop us once.  My chaturanga was not strong!

Anyway, I won't give away the secrets of Liquid Motion but I really did enjoy the class.  It was humbling realizing that, even when I feel silly, I can't let go because I'll let my partner down.  This was not just about me.  It was a great feeling to try dancing with new people but I still prefer dancing with Ginger.  We did some breathing and moving in the beginning.  We were asked to really pay attention to who was leading and make sure we both took turns.  There were a few times when it was clear that one of us initiated a move, but I felt like a good portion of that exercise, I absolutely could not tell who was leading.  I think we just are that in tune now.

Danielle was a great instructor.  She had a clear curriculum and was open to suggestions as some of us with different body types talked about how to make certain moves work for us (until we realized we were shoulder rolling the wrong way, Brie and I ate a lot of boob).  I'm always concerned that a thinner instructor won't understand how my larger body works.  But I never felt judged, she was always helpful with suggestions, and was open to listening to us talk about how to make moves work.
I want to thank Sandra and Kitty Kats Korner for opening their home to me once again, and thank you to Danielle for traveling to this coast to teach us how to be liquid!  Thank you Jeanette for taking photos!  And THANK YOU to Ginger for being you.  If you've ever been curious about taking a Liquid Motion workshop, I absolutely recommend it.  They can accommodate all levels.  And, especially if you are shy and feel awkward being sexy, you should make yourself take one of these workshops!

Don't mind my wild hair and creepy face...it was that kind of workshop!

Workshops with Tracee Kafer

Ginger, Jade, Tracee, Terri and me
So during Air Show weekend, OVER A MONTH AGO (yes, I'm behind), I got to take two workshops with the beautiful and talented Tracee Kafer of Body & Pole.

Friday night was Finding Your Freestyle.  Luckily, I was near the beautiful ladies of Venus Pole Fitness of Turlock, so there were plenty of giggles and fun to be had during class.  This class focused a lot on becoming comfortable with yourself and aware of all of your parts.  So we danced and emphasized "odd" body parts, such as elbows.  I prayed for "boobs" but got elbows (which somehow turned into "penis" in our group...sorry, Tracee, can't take us anywhere!).  It was a really fun reminder that I need to get out of my head and just let myself dance but also be aware of what my body is doing.  I also need to start turning down the lights and just letting my body move sometimes.  Lately, I have felt so self-conscious because I don't feel comfortable in my own skin and I feel like I have lost a lot of strength and fluidity in my dance.  I often feel like I get left behind in workshops (which is not anyone's fault but my own) since I am not advanced but this was a workshop in which I could keep up.  I can't promise I looked good!  But I didn't feel left out.  Allison Wardwell was also in class with us.  She is a really amazing dancer and it was sometimes difficult to concentrate because I just wanted to watch her dance rather than muddle through my own moves.

At the end of the workshop, we had to dance for a partner (ooooh I was so lucky...my partner was so beautiful!!!  Thanks for putting up with me Rhiannon!!).  We had to choose an emotion and dance.  I couldn't really pinpoint my emotion as I danced.  I was kind of frustrated with my foot for being injured and I was blaming it for holding me back.  But I had hope for the future.  How do you dance that?  Rhiannon guesses my emotion...I feel like you're trying to find your voice.  I said, naw, that's not it...wait a second...YES THAT IS EXACTLY IT!  It was kind of a cool moment.  I also felt like I nailed her emotion.  I believe I guessed hopeful or longing and I believe she was going for longing (guess it would have helped to bring my notes today!!).  Anyway, I thought it was a really awesome experience.  I took videos throughout but am kind of glad they were too dark to post.  It was one of those intimate experiences that might be good to keep to yourself.

Saturday was Grounded Spins on Static.  Tracee came with a seven or eight spin combo.  I could remember all the parts but there were definitely a few pieces that I didn't perform well due to strength issues.  I have it on video and need to grab the clip and remind myself so I can continue to practice it (I am currently getting comfortable in letting myself one arm spin into Juliette).  I really had a fun time (and was happy to see the ladies from Kitty Kats' Korner there).  I also got to share a pole with Ann, who takes classes at Poletential.  She was really sweet and we had fun chatting during class (and hopefully kept ourselves on track and moving forward when we both felt slightly frustrated with a couple of the moves).

Tracee also performed at Air Show that evening.  She is always such a beautiful and expressive dancer.  I tried to guess her emotion that evening and I felt like it was difficult to pinpoint, but after discussing how she felt that day about the direction in which her life is going, I felt like I was pretty close!

I want to thank Tracee for putting up with me and am looking forward to our next meeting!  Have you ever taken a workshop with Tracee?  Tell me about your experience!

Poletry in Motion: Kitty Kats' Korner

So here is a random chain of events over the last few years that lead up to a champagne and cupcake party at a studio in Vacaville less than two weeks ago.

A few years back, I randomly started talking to Jade on Studio Veena's website.  That lead to her coming to Twirly Girls and now she teaches there.  She also goes to a studio closer to her home called Kitty Kats' Korner

Last year, around this time, I took Nadia and Mina to Sacramento for a workshop and met a lady named Jeanette.  She had been looking for a studio closer to her home and I mentioned Kitty Kats' Korner.  Maybe five or six months ago, a girl named Stephanie joined my Pole Dancers Unite group on Facebook.  I realize she's local and mention the Jade-Kitty Kat connection...and Stephanie already goes there!

One thing I really enjoy doing is taking photos of cupcakes and putting them on Facebook.  Everyone notices that I over-post cupcake photos.  One day, Stephanie says, hey we should have cupcake night, so fast forward to a Friday night just over a week ago and I came to Kitty Kats' Korner to have cupcakes and pole jam with some lovely ladies!

Kitty Kats' Korner is located in Vacaville.  It is inside the Naughty or Nice Boutique, which has the most adorable guard dogs, Bailey and Jedda.  The back room has been transformed into a very safe and sexy work space.  The warm-up was very sensual and fun.  There was (I believe) one brass pole and three Lil Mynxes.  Actually, I believe there were five poles, though, so now I need to go back and look over the photos.  But I digress.  I had never used a Lil Mynx and I really loved it.  They are powder-coated so you get a little bit more "stick" but you can still spin on them.

After the warm up, and breaking up into groups with one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced student, we worked on some moves.  Then we started mingling more and just had a lot of fun.  The cameras broke out and all the crazy photos started.

At one point, Sandra, the owner, had everyone sit while a couple of different groups performed.  The vibe at Kitty Kats' is very sexy and sensual.  One of the groups did a very tactile number where they basically incorporated everything they touched into whatever they were doing.  They were in a circle around the outside of the room and they slowly moved around the room touching everything -- the walls, the floor, the feather boas hanging on the walls, the poles...  I was sitting so that I had a view of people coming around a corner.  The song was long -- but I was never bored and I anticipated every single person coming around that corner because I wanted to know how each person would incorporate that corner into their dance.  It was really awesome to watch.

I really want to thank Sandra for allowing an outsider, Jade, Jeanette, Stephanie, and all of the girls for having me out for such a fun evening!
