Workshops with Tracee Kafer

Ginger, Jade, Tracee, Terri and me
So during Air Show weekend, OVER A MONTH AGO (yes, I'm behind), I got to take two workshops with the beautiful and talented Tracee Kafer of Body & Pole.

Friday night was Finding Your Freestyle.  Luckily, I was near the beautiful ladies of Venus Pole Fitness of Turlock, so there were plenty of giggles and fun to be had during class.  This class focused a lot on becoming comfortable with yourself and aware of all of your parts.  So we danced and emphasized "odd" body parts, such as elbows.  I prayed for "boobs" but got elbows (which somehow turned into "penis" in our group...sorry, Tracee, can't take us anywhere!).  It was a really fun reminder that I need to get out of my head and just let myself dance but also be aware of what my body is doing.  I also need to start turning down the lights and just letting my body move sometimes.  Lately, I have felt so self-conscious because I don't feel comfortable in my own skin and I feel like I have lost a lot of strength and fluidity in my dance.  I often feel like I get left behind in workshops (which is not anyone's fault but my own) since I am not advanced but this was a workshop in which I could keep up.  I can't promise I looked good!  But I didn't feel left out.  Allison Wardwell was also in class with us.  She is a really amazing dancer and it was sometimes difficult to concentrate because I just wanted to watch her dance rather than muddle through my own moves.

Venus Pole Fitness letting me jump in on their photo
At the end of the workshop, we had to dance for a partner (ooooh I was so lucky...my partner was so beautiful!!!  Thanks for putting up with me Rhiannon!!).  We had to choose an emotion and dance.  I couldn't really pinpoint my emotion as I danced.  I was kind of frustrated with my foot for being injured and I was blaming it for holding me back.  But I had hope for the future.  How do you dance that?  Rhiannon guesses my emotion...I feel like you're trying to find your voice.  I said, naw, that's not it...wait a second...YES THAT IS EXACTLY IT!  It was kind of a cool moment.  I also felt like I nailed her emotion.  I believe I guessed hopeful or longing and I believe she was going for longing (guess it would have helped to bring my notes today!!).  Anyway, I thought it was a really awesome experience.  I took videos throughout but am kind of glad they were too dark to post.  It was one of those intimate experiences that might be good to keep to yourself.

Saturday was Grounded Spins on Static.  Tracee came with a seven or eight spin combo.  I could remember all the parts but there were definitely a few pieces that I didn't perform well due to strength issues.  I have it on video and need to grab the clip and remind myself so I can continue to practice it (I am currently getting comfortable in letting myself one arm spin into Juliette).  I really had a fun time (and was happy to see the ladies from Kitty Kats' Korner there).  I also got to share a pole with Ann, who takes classes at Poletential.  She was really sweet and we had fun chatting during class (and hopefully kept ourselves on track and moving forward when we both felt slightly frustrated with a couple of the moves).

Tracee also performed at Air Show that evening.  She is always such a beautiful and expressive dancer.  I tried to guess her emotion that evening and I felt like it was difficult to pinpoint, but after discussing how she felt that day about the direction in which her life is going, I felt like I was pretty close!

I want to thank Tracee for putting up with me and am looking forward to our next meeting!  Have you ever taken a workshop with Tracee?  Tell me about your experience!

Air Show, Flight 5

Terri, Lori, Rita and Sean Michael The Great!
So I have been lost in a pile of other stuff and haven't yet had a chance to blog about Poletential's Air Show, Flight 5!  They had a brand new venue with REAL poles all the way to the ceiling.  Aerial acrobats galore!!  It was an amazing show!

Some of the awesome instructors from Body & Pole in New York came out for workshops and to perform (Tracee Kafer, Allison Wardwell and Elaina Royter).  I took two workshops with Tracee (and will blog about that soon).

You can watch most of the show on Poletential's YouTube account.  Check out the playlist below.

One of my favorites didn't make it into the playlist, so don't miss the straps Fever routine!

One of the videos was damaged, so here's my footage of Allison Wardwell from Body & Pole.

Poletential will be hosting Air Shows twice a year at their new Fox venue in Redwood City.  Keep an eye on their website, I'm sure an announcement will be coming soon regarding Flight 6 in May!

Cowboy Wild's Good Old Fashioned Pole Down - an AIDS LifeCycle Fundraiser!

We are less than a month away from our next pole dance fundraiser at Club 1220.  This one benefits Cowboy Wild's AIDS LifeCycle ride!  The Facebook event can be found HERE (you can also find the most current list of performers there as well).

WANTED:

Pole cleaners!  Especially pole cleaners happy to dress up in cowgirl or boy attire.

We are looking for online pole companies or other local businesses that would be willing to donate items for the raffle.  If you are interested, please contact us through the Confessions of a Twirly Girl fan page.  You can use the link on the right hand side of the page to go to the Facebook page and send a private message.

We are also looking for local polers who may be interested in participating in a pole-dance-off that night at the event!  Names will be drawn at the show so send us your names if you'd like to be included on the list (you can send a message to the Confessions of a Twirly Girl fan page as well).  Winner gets a prize!  Who doesn't love prizes?!

Now, normally we don't take tips, however at this show, TIPPING IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED!

The cover charge is only $6 and the dancers will be donating their tips to support Robert in this 500 mile (plus) bike ride.

In addition to many Twirly Girl favorites, I hear Ck from Poletential will be dancing for us!!  You don't want to miss her 1220 debut!

So, please join us on Saturday, February 1st at 6:00 PM at Club 1220 in Walnut Creek for a night of fun and exciting performances (1220 is bar so 21 and up only!).  Hey guess what, I recently decided that I will be performing as well!  I got my song and my costume and my concept...so now I better get to work!

Can't make it to the show but still want to donate?  Robert's fundraising page can be found HERE.

News at Poletential: Rock PPC and AIR SHOW THIS WEEKEND!!!!

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, and are planning to compete in PSO's Pacific Pole Championship in March, then Poletential is the place to be!  They have been hosting Rock PPC:  workshops, pole jams and other events to help local competitors get ready for the competition.  I got to attend one of the free pole jams recently and had a great experience watching everyone help each other with their pole moves.  Ellen even sat with me for a few and talked to me about my weight struggles and gave me some great strengthening exercises.  These are invite-only type events, so please e-mail the studio if you are interested in joining Rock PPC (not just for competitors...the workshops would be great for anyone wanting to strengthen their pole routines).

And...THIS WEEKEND...Poletential hosts their fifth Air Show at a brand new location!  In addition, there will be workshops all weekend with Tracee Kafer, Elaine Royter and Allison Wardwell from Body & Pole in New York.  I have two workshops scheduled with Tracee and am so excited to see the show.  Please note that downtown Redwood City has some events going on so come early and watch for road closures.  I know some of the Twirly Girls will be having dinner around 5 PM to celebrate Rita's birthday.  The venue doors open at 7 PM.  Show is at 8!

If you are in the Bay Area this weekend, Redwood City is the place to be!  Hope to see you there!

Happy Twirloween! Poletential's 7th Birthday!

On October 26, I collected up my Sean Michael and headed over to Poletential's 7th birthday party/showcase called Twirloween.  I feel very fortunate to have found an extended pole family at Poletential.

First off, there was a freaking amazing photo booth at the party, with Poletential's resident photographer, Hopparazzi Photography.  There was a food tent outside with way too many delicious treats.  We got to witness so many aerial arts -- silks, hammocks, pole and trapeze.  There were so many impressive group performances.  It was fun to see old friends and make new ones.  Annemarie Davies of United Pole Artists was in town for workshops and so we got to witness a rocktastic performance from her.

Once again, I feel like a picture is worth 1,000 words, so please check out the video playlist of the performances (they are ALL not to be missed), and also a few photos from Hopparazzi's photo booth (shout out to Hopparazzi for allowing me to share these with you)!

Check out the entire Hopparazzi album on Facebook HERE.

April Blog Hop: Twirly Girls at Pacific Pole Championship

For April's Blog Hop, we are talking about pole competitions.  There sure are enough of them around.  Thanks to the "new" day job, I haven't even updated my list in awhile, which was quickly reaching 10+ pages for only a couple of years worth of events.

In March, three+ beloved Twirly Girls participated in the Pacific Pole Championships down in Los Angeles, California.  As I have been asked by Vertical Art and Fitness to write about the event, I want to keep this post fairly simple.

I do have some opinions about competitions in general, safety, timing, judging, etc....but feel as an "ambassador," I should probably keep some of the more negative opinions to myself.  There have been some discussions on Facebook about fair judging.  I feel like I am not on a level to comment officially, although I do feel like changes should probably be made, especially after speaking to several judges from various competitions over the last year.

Anyway, back to my lovelies from Twirly Girls.  PPC spanned two days this year.  Our girl, Alyssa, was participating for the very first time.  She was in the category of Championship -- Level 2 -- Junior.  She competed on Friday.

First, to define the competition category, here it is straight from PPC's website:

The Championship Event: This event is for those dancers wishing to compete with a traditional technical competitive program. Designed to offer competitors the type of experience found at the other major pole competitions, the focus will be on the dancer’s technique, flexibility, artistry and difficulty of tricks.

Level 2 (Intermediate): This is the appropriate level for intermediate dancers who have the ability to invert safely. In addition to the skills permitted in Level 1, dancers may invert on the pole (hips higher than head), however dancers must maintain three points of contact with the pole while inverted.

Juniors: between the ages of 18-24 on or before the date of the event.

Alyssa took FIRST!  FIRST PLACE!  This was her very first competition and we are SO proud of her.  Check out her performance HERE.  Alyssa received a very sweet compliment from Kelly Yvonne of the Choreography House when she came off stage.  Unfortunately, we were watching United Pole Artists Facebook page, so we got the results as another performer (in another category) was competiting.  Sorry about the silent cheers and the jumping in our seats!!

Diana was next to compete, but not until Saturday.  Diana competed in PPC last year, so this was her second time participating in this event.  Diana competed in the Entertainment -- Level 3 -- Junior/Senior division.

The Entertainment Event: This event is focused less on the difficulty of the tricks executed and more on the dancer’s ability to interpret a piece of music to provide a comical or upbeat performance.

Level 3 (Advanced): This is the appropriate level for the more advanced pole dancer who can invert and perform movements such as handsprings or ayashas safely and securely. Dancers at this level may perform any tricks and any inversions.

Seniors: between the ages of 25-39 on or before the date of the event.

Diana did not place in the top three but she did really well, especially after the line-up was changed at the last minute and the person who performed right before her was another person named Diana who also did a zombie-themed routine.  Seriously?!  How does THAT happen??  That would have totally ruined my day but Diana came out and still rocked it.  Check out our Diana's performance HERE

Last up from the Twirly Tribe was Sean Michael.  (Side note:  I love this boy.  I take Sean Michael's class at Twirly Girls on Saturdays.  If you are in the area and looking for a good class, give it a try.)  Sean Michael competed Saturday evening.  He was in the Championship -- Level 3 -- Male division.  There were only two competitors in this division.  Their scores were separated by two-tenths of a point.  Sean Michael, unfortunately, placed second.  I felt like the winner had a very "safe" routine.  Sean Michael's routine was strong, original and fun to watch.  Check it out HERE

I absolutely must give an honorable mention to Twirly Girls friends Kate Cotruvo (Club Etak) and Tiffany Rose Mockler (Poletential).  We love our Nor Cal Pole Posse.  They both did a great job at the competition!  You can see Kate's competition routines below:

Kate Entertainment Level 3

Kate Championship Level 3

Congrats to all competitors.  By my count, almost 150 people competed that weekend.  I saw a lot of slippery poles and I give props to those who put themselves out there and do this!

Don't forget, this is a blog hop!  If you want to read other bloggers' takes on pole competitions, click HERE.

Poletential's Third Air Show!

Poletential has DONE IT AGAIN!  Their third Air Show was another huge success.  (Check out my post about the second Air Show HERE.)

This time, the show was on a Friday night, and the ENTIRE REST OF THE WEEKEND was filled with poletastic workshops and events.

The show was headlined by David C. Owen, Nadia Sharif, Flying Laura, Amber Richard, Aerial Amy and the Paper Doll Militia.  Also, many of the amazing students and instructors from Poletential performed.  I think one of my favorite things about a Poletential show is the caliber of performer that they create.  All of the students do such a great job of getting into character.

Anyway, I could talk all day about how amazeballs the performers were.  Nadia Sharif spinning and climbing through an aerial cube.  David C. Owen bending in the craziest ways.  Flying Laura killing it, even though she's still nursing a broken finger.  Aerial Amy making it look easy with her sexy floor work and flawless spins.  Amber Richard busting out an awesome reprise of her Girls Next Door 80's performance.  And local performers, the Paper Doll Militia doing a jaw-dropping silks routine on CHAINS.  But you don't want to read my review.  You want to watch it yourself!  Check out the YouTube play list:

The rest of the weekend was really great too.  Due to some other issues, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to participate in any other events.  On Saturday, Twirly Girls had their 2013 calendar shoot.  It was a long (but fun) day.  But, after the shoot, Rita and I headed back over the bridge to meet Annemarie Davies and Alex Davies (from United Pole Artists), as well as Nadia Sharif (a freaking pole ninja).  And things just got crazier from there.  We joined the Poletential crowd at a local pub where we mingled with the rest of the pros and students from the studio.  There are not many words to explain what happened next.  Mostly just: Best.  Night.  Ever.  hahaha!  Pictures are below.

As we dropped Annemarie, Alex and Nadia off at the hotel, Nadia encouraged Rita and I to come to her workshop the next morning.  At first, I declined, mostly because I had been running around all weekend and needed to do some things at home.  Then I decided, why not...you really shouldn't pass up opportunities when they are smacking you in the face.  So, on Sunday, we attended Nadia and Mina's doubles workshop.  Then I stayed for Aerial Amy's fluidity and floorwork workshop.

The doubles workshop was so fun.  Nadia and Mina are such a great team.  They seem to know what the other is thinking at all times.  We did some partner stretches, then worked on a few pole moves.  The entire workshop lasted over two hours.  Rita and I were not advanced enough to do some of the moves, and since I am a sweaty beast, its really hard for me to partner up with people anyway.  But I felt like we learned a lot.  I did successfully complete an acro shoulder stand off of David C. Owen's thighs!  I so wish I had a photo of that.  Sorry about the whole vagina in your face, David!

Amy's floorwork workshop was amazing in a different way.  We spent an entire 90 minutes on the floor.  Crawling and writhing.  Tossing our hair.  Moving our bodies in very sexy ways.  I don't know how to really describe it.  Sexy is not really something I pull off very well and this definitely took me out of my comfort zone ... in a good way.  I tried very hard to not watch myself in the mirror, as I get VERY self-conscious.  But Amber Richard paid me a very sweet compliment and said I looked just fine.  Sexy is not a size.  Confidence is sexy.  I keep forgetting that.

As I sit here on a Monday morning, tired and sore, I am so glad that I didn't turn down any opportunities.  I had such a great time all weekend and I want to say that I really adore my new little friend, Nadia (she really is tiny, her head only comes up to my boobs!).  My boobies can be her pillows any day!

Poletry in Motion: Poletential!

Poletential is really becoming my home away from home.  Even though I am technically from another studio, they have all embraced me and I feel very welcome there.  Nothing can replace my Twirly Girls...I love Bel and every single person at the studio.  But it has certainly been fun meeting up with friends at Poletential on occasion!

Here are some of my past Poletential adventures:

I can't believe its been a week since my last post on the Confessions blog.  I went to Los Angeles for BeSpun's Pole Show LA and was working like mad through the weekend (shout out to Christina from Poletential...she was there too!).  I went to Poletential for Jessica's Pole-In-Motion class on the Sunday before I left on the trip.  Each week the class learns a short routine based on different genres of dance.

That week was Showgirl Style.  I really loved it.  It was simple but really cute and for those of us (ahem, mostly just me) who couldn't do a trick or two, she had options.  I felt like she broke down the pieces into small enough bites so that dance-dummies, like me, could keep up.  I sweat.  Of course.  I had fun.  (TRACEY WAS THERE!)  I also met Samantha there (we met on Studio Veena and she recently moved to the area) and Uzette from Alice Radio (San Francisco radio station, KLLC 97.3 FM).

I was really excited to meet up with Uzette because she is going to be doing a short pole routine in a couple of weeks at a Sarah and Vinnie Secret Show!  (More info on that later!)

Anyway, I had a great time taking class with Jessica at Poletential.  It has really inspired me to start learning how to DANCE more (not the silly body wiggle that I usually do).   So thank you to Jessica and all of the Poletential girls for being awesome as usual!  I am hoping to actually come out again this Sunday for another hammocks class...gotta check that schedule.

My Top Ten Pole Dancing Posts from 2011

I've been trying to choose my top ten blog posts (from my own blog) for 2011.  It was so hard because I talked to a lot of amazing people this year.  I had a hard time picking only ten so I decided to choose posts to represent different categories.

Instructor Spotlight on Ellen Lovelace!

I had heard of Ellen Lovelace many times before I actually met her at a Poletential event. She is an amazing dancer and instructor, and she makes me giggle. I loved the hammocks class I took with her last weekend. Here is Ellen!

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I’ve done machine Pilates for about 5 years, twice a week. I pole 3 to 4 days a week. I usually take an aerial yoga class once a week, and now am teaching one about once a week as well. And, due to my unfortunate litany of injuries, I have a whole routine of at-home PT exercises that I do in one form or another almost every night.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I try to always eat a variety from the major food groups: bread, pasta, cookies, and bagels. ;-) I’m allergic to dairy and eggs, and I choose not to eat pork or beef…so I’m kind of like a vegan who eats chicken and fish. In all seriousness, I’ve tried eating low-carb high-protein tons of fruits and veggies, and it just makes me gain weight and feel hungry all the time. So I eat what I want, but in moderation.

Do you have a dance background?

Not formally, no. I’ve always danced in one form or another, starting as a Madonna impersonator in my bedroom, then cheerleading and musical theater, leading up to sensual dance and pole. But not formally trained.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

No, I don’t. This past summer I actually pushed myself WAY outside my box, and submitted an entry to the Masters (40+) division for the Midwest Pole Championship. I was so incredibly honored and blown away to be chosen by the judges to be one of the 6 competitors! However, due to many reasons, including a crazy summer schedule and a shoulder injury, I had to decline. In hindsight, I’m really glad I entered, but I know I made the right choice for me, and won’t be entering any more competitions. I pole because I love it, and that’s all the validation I need.

Do you teach pole classes? If so, where?

Yes! I teach at Poletential in Redwood City , CA . It’s a great studio with a non-competitive atmosphere full of fun women who pole for the joy of it. I teach a few different things, from choreographed dances to intensive clinics (invert, floorwork, etc.) to pure hard tricks-based classes.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I love both, but if I had to pick only one to do forever, it would have to be dancing. I think my joints would prefer that choice, as well.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

To each his or her own. There’s room for all forms of expression. I just don’t like it when people are adamant about one over the other.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Usually, just clean hands and pole are all I use. If I am trying something brand-new super-scary that requires a lot of grip and don’t want to worry about sliding, I use a quick shot of Firm Grip. Our studio poles are 50mm so sometimes it helps to stick your hands in place!

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

Since I discovered Aveeno Daily Moisturizing lotion, I haven’t had dry skin in years! I apply it every day—it leaves you moist and slightly sticky, so it’s perfect for pole. On non-pole days, I hydrate deeply with Kiehl’s Crème de Corps.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I wear a ton of pole tanks from our studio and others. Unfortunately, all the tiny cute pole and yoga tops are not made for my “girls”, so I wear great bras from Champion. And I am eternally on the hunt for the perfect pole shorts. Still haven’t found them!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Both. I tend to go in cycles of one more than the other. I need to get better about making myself practice tricks in heels.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

It’s everything I love about any form of dance: losing yourself in the music and movement. Plus, the challenge of integrating tricks in a way that the dance never stops. That’s what motivates me--how can I make this seamless and pretty?

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

So many come to mind! But I guess the two songs that will always get me up and moving are Slow Dancing in a Burning Room by John Mayer and The Way I Are by Timbaland. Totally schizophrenic, I know!

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio(s)?

I’m 41, and until I touched a pole 4 years ago I was pretty much an out-of-shape couch potato. Pole has transformed my life and self-confidence, and made me appreciate what my body can do for me. The bruises, calluses, and injuries are all just proof that I’ve turned my body into a tool that can achieve some pretty awesome things!

Poletential's Second Air Show!

Warning:  With videos, this will be a long one.  Feel free to skip around if you can't sit still for very long.  :-)

Last weekend, Poletential held it's second Air Show filled with pole dancing and aerial arts galore!  [You can check out Poletential's first Air Show HERE.]

On Friday, after workshops, they had a pole jam.  A pole jam is an informal gathering of pole dancers to hang out, chat and dance together.  I was such a pole geek.  First and foremost, I met fellow blogger, Aerial Amy, who was hanging out with Poletential instructor, Ellen Lovelace.  I also saw Natasha Wang, Alethea Austin and Amy Guion.  I met Karol Helms and Marlo Fisken in person for the first time.  Estee Zakar and Sarah Romanowsky (silks) were the last two pros who were in the showcase but they were not at the pole jam.

Rita and I mostly hung out and chatted with people.  We didn't pole.  We checked out Alethea's and Karol's awesome merchandise.  We talked with Christina A. from Poletential, who was a pregnant M&M at their Twirloween event, so she will always in my mind be the green M&M.  We also got to see our good friend, TraceyPoletential Owner, Christina Kish, was also there.  The studio was hopping with people preparing for Saturday's show.

Marlo, Natasha and Amy wanted to head back to the hotel and I happened to have my monster truck with me, so I offered to drive them to pick up food and then take them back to the hotel.  Of course, who wouldn't want to have the adorable booties of those three ladies imprinted in their car?!  On the drive, we talked about Natasha's recent blog about body image (check out my response HERE).  Marlo said that she doesn't want to get kudos for something unless she actually pulls on some amazing move.  I said that when I climbed to the top of the pole, we almost threw a party.  However, for me, that WAS an earth-shattering move!  They are professional competitors, so their standard of excellence is much higher than the average pole dancer.

Saturday was the Air Show.  I sat near a group of super fun ladies.  I met Tina Kelly, owner of Venus Pole Fitness of Turlock and I plan to do a Poletry in Motion for her studio soon.  She promised to come to Twirly Girls one day too.  I don't want to take much too much space talking about the show since the videos will speak for themselves.  After the show, Amy Kim did ask me my top two performers.  It was so hard to say since I loved each and every performance for a different reason.  Shelly Lamb made a great comment, saying that she had competed with most of these girls in New York and it was so different to see them in a showcase setting instead of a competition setting.  They were so much more relaxed, which I'm sure made it much more fun to perform.  Anyway, back to Amy's question.  I told Amy that I had to give it to Marlo because I LOVED her rockin' song (all of the other girls performed to slow songs, which I totally love and respect since I have a hard time dancing to slow songs, but I always love the down and dirty rock songs!).  I also had to give it to Natasha, since she is my personal favorite.  She always responds to me on Facebook and I'm doing a workshop with her tonight at Twirly Girls.  She is such a lovely and graceful dancer.  However, Amy Guion's performance was so beautiful and the smile on her face during her entire performance was amazing as well (her theme for the dance was dreaming of being a princess).  And, although Alethea danced to a slow song she oozed sex and pure awesomeness, as usual.  This was my first time seeing Estee Zakar, Marlo Fisken and Karol Helms perform.  They were all crazy off the hook as well (I'm running out of adjectives to show much I love this show)!  So it was hard to pick my top two favorites.  They were all my favorites for different reasons.

This show also contained a lot more silks.  My very own silks teacher, Sarah Starlight, performed with her friend, Jennifer.  She did such a great job!  Also, Sarah Romanowsky, who performed at Twirloween, and who has been chatting with me on Facebook and Twitter, performed on the silks.  I really loved her outfit and I wish I had her hip bones!

I have to say the show opener and scene stealer was Christina's imitation of Alethea.  Oh.  My.  God.  When I first saw the blonde hair and stomach tattoos from afar, I knew it was Alethea.  There was something off.  Different.  I couldn't put my finger on it.  But no one else in the show had a tattoo on her stomach like that.  The rockstar swagger was there.  I was slightly shocked they'd have a pro actually start the show, but maybe she had somewhere to go and needed to leave early.  Then it hit me.  THAT WAS AN IMPOSTER!  This is best viewed on video because I can't give Christina enough kudos for her act.  And Alethea is clearly a good sport.  Man, what a great intro!

Anyway, check out the videos below and then I'll finish up with some photos, my Sunday class and my impression of the whole weekend at the end:

I loved Estee's music.  It's kind of industrial and animalistic.  She has an amazing body and such muscle control!  I also really liked her costume!

Like I said, Amy's sweet smile really made this performance.  I totally love the princess theme too!  She too has amazing muscle control and a beautiful body!

As Karol herself said on Facebook, my angle captured her asstastic beginning!  Perfect song too.  She certainly does move in mysterious ways.  Such control!!

Alethea...what else can you say about her?  So sexy.  Those body rolls are so awesome.  I want to do everything she does!!  I think I'm like a day or two away from being able to pull off her moves.  Or not.  ;-)

Sarah is so beautiful on the silks. Such flexibility and grace!

When I took Natasha to the hotel, Rita and I wondered why she had a basket of apples.  We were like, look how healthy she is!!  We told her she could re-enact the Twilight cover.  She said that was fitting since her dance was wolf themed.  Now we understand...  lol!  I loved the Red Riding Hood/Big Bad Wolf theme!  It might be hard to see in the video but she had make up that made it look like the Wolf had really kicked her ass!

Marlo apparently had to change her routine around because stage poles are not as steady as those attached to the ceiling.  She definitely pulled off a rockin' routine.  I guess her song doesn't count as a true "down and dirty rock song," but I pretty much count any fast music as down and dirty.  :-D

I finished off Air Show weekend by taking aerial hammock with Ellen Lovelace and Aerial Amy.  I live an hour away from Redwood City, so I got home Saturday night around midnight but didn't get to sleep until 1 a.m.  I got up at 7 a.m. on Sunday to get to silks on time.  I thought I'd be super tired but I was fine.  And I loved Ellen's class.  It was different than Jessica's class.  I was actually able to do most of the moves.  Other than a couple of moves that aggravated my old lady hip, I think I held my own.  I even did two...count them TWO....back somersaults!  Well, Ellen helped me because there is a point when I'm upside down that I swear I'm going to lose my grip and fall on my head -- but I did it!!  ("Did it" meaning I did the somersaults, not the falling on my noggin.)

Poletential put on another awesome show.  And thank you for always being so welcoming and kind to the Twirly Girls!

CHEATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So it's no secret that I enjoy traveling around to other studios and checking out classes.  It doesn't mean I am not completely in love with Twirly Girls and Bel.  It just means I like making new friends.  It's also no secret that I do side work for a company called Social Sonar, which helps businesses with their social media needs.  I have a day job to pay the bills.  Helping pole dance studios (and other businesses) through Social Sonar is a passion of mine.  I enjoy writing and watching small businesses grow (and I feel like small businesses are going to help fix our broken economy someday).  Sure, it would be lovely to one day do it full time and completely immerse myself in the pole dance community.  But, for now, I am happy to do it in my spare time.  I don't make visits to other studios to sell services.  I feel like I am building relationships and making connections so that one day if they DO need a service like that, they know where to come.  And if they don't, I still want to visit their studio and try out new classes.

Anyway, it sounds like some people are bothered that I'm checking out other studios.  I am up-front and honest with Bel when I go to other studios.  She isn't bothered by it, so I don't know why other people are.  I have no intention of leaving Twirly Girls -- it is my home and my family is there!  Maybe I am being naive in believing I can be a "pole dance ambassador" and bring people together.  But it makes me feel good to at least pretend that I am.  I realize that I am not going to like everyone and certainly, not everyone will like me.  But, for the most part, I get along with people and enjoy meeting new friends.  Plus, most of the studios I'm visiting are far enough away that they are not direct competition with Twirly Girls anyway.  If I went to a studio a mile down the street, then maybe people should be more concerned (or not...).

Anyway, Bel says she wanted to fashion Twirly Girls after One World Crossfit.  They built their business on the concept of creating a family so that you could to any Crossfit in the world and feel like you are at home.  I am trying to continue that with the pole world at large.  I realize there is a difference between the pro circuit and students at "regular ol'" pole dance/fitness studios.  Perhaps the competition circuit will always have a little more of an aggressive feel to it (as it should since it is a competition).  But there is no reason that us regular ol' pole girls can't get along, be friends and support each other.  I have met some amazing ladies during my travels.  For example:  Collette and Felicia from OC Pole Fitness.  Amy from BeSpun.  Christina, Pam, Ellen, Jessica, Amber and Tracey from Poletential.  Diana from Embody Fitness.  And the list goes on...

I think it's great that people love Bel enough to be concerned...but fear not!  I am a Twirly Girl through and through.  Even when I go to Poletential (which, at an hour's drive away, is the closest studio I've visited), Christina always greets us with, "We love when the Twirly Girls visit!!!"  Also, please don't be worried that Bel sold anyone out.  She didn't give me any names but just said that people were worried.  I hope this post puts everyone's minds at ease.  :-)

So what about the rest of you?  Do you try out other studios or do you stick close to home?  Nothing wrong with going either way on this one!

Aerial Hammock/Yoga at Poletential

Poletential seems to be quickly becoming my home away from home.  Although they are an hour away, so I can't really get there regularly for classes, they have some fun events that I have been really excited to attend.  I didn't get a chance to write much about it, but I was touched that Tracey invited Rita and me to Twirloween -- Poletential's birthday party and student/instructor showcase.  There are some videos on my YouTube account if you are interested.

Of course my first direct contact with Poletential was the Air Show last July.  I had so much fun and am eagerly anticipating the second Air Show next month.

I also attended a Zumba FUNdraiser to benefit the beautiful Tracey Horne.  What a lovely bunch of women who came together to support their pole sister in a time of need.

Also, don't forget Christina and Pam answered my Studio Spotlight questions recently as well.

In early October I had tried aerial silks at Twirly Girls and saw that Poletential had aerial hammock.  It looked a little easier than silks.  Rita and I signed up immediately, but due to scheduling issues, didn't get in for a class until yesterday.  I saw an aerial hammock demonstration at OC Pole Fitness' open house in September.  I mean, those girls were advanced and did some amazing things in the hammock but I figured anything with the word "hammock" in it couldn't be that hard.

Rita and I arrived at Poletential yesterday, ready for whatever the afternoon held for us.  Jessica was our instructor.  I guess I knew we wouldn't be gently swinging in the breeze, but I still don't know what I actually expected.  I figured it would be yoga-based as I had also heard aerial hammock described as aerial yoga.  But I certainly didn't expect the workout that I got!

We started seated on the ground doing a gentle warm-up/stretch and then Jessica told us to reach up and grab the hammock to lift ourselves off the floor.  I giggled.  Surely she was joking.  She wasn't and she lifted herself like a cute little genie and floated above the ground with her legs still folded.  I attempted to pull myself up, then saved myself the embarrassment and just stood up.

Then the real fun began:  Warming up with one of our legs in the hammock.  I will pretend that part of why I struggled so much was because I chose a hammock a little too low to the ground.  So my leg in the hammock was angled downward a bit instead of straight out.  Yeah, we'll go with that.

Ten minutes into the warm-up, I was sweating my ass off.  I struggled through some of the poses, mostly due to my own inability to balance (weak core, yes, I know!).  I joked with Jessica that I had signed up for the gentle hammock class (not the boot camp my body thought I was putting it through).  She shot back that we were almost done with the warm-up...and I don't think she was kidding.  :-)

After some awesome yoga poses, both on the ground and in the air, and some inversions (which I was only able to do for a little bit because the silks dug into my bad hip a little too much), we snuggled into the hammocks like little bugs in a rug for Savasana -- the final resting pose in yoga.  It's the few minutes you get to lay still, recover and reflect after you've worked so hard.  I swear there was a small earthquake.  The hammock swayed gently and bumped into one of the girls behind me.  It was not scary or uncomfortable.  It was kind of weird -- almost re-assuring that another person was floating in space with me.

I really enjoyed the class and am really sore today.  I know I have a long way to go before I would be able to consider myself even slightly adept at aerial yoga.  But I am always down for a challenge and am hoping to get in there at least once a month.  I also want to thank Jessica for putting up with me.  I know I tend to be a bit silly when I'm uncomfortable.

Thank you to Poletential for always being so welcoming to the Twirly Girls.  Next up:  I am definitely looking forward to trying some Liquid Pole with Ellen soon!
