Our very own Seanmichael won the men's division of the Pole Sport Organization's U.S. National Pole Championships in New York a little over a week ago. There really are no words for how proud I am to know this man. He is very sweet and it has been so fun to watch him blossom as a pole dancer. I want to congratulate Seanmichael on his win. It was well-deserved! And a shout out to his coach, Ellen!! They make a great team!
Here is his official video:
Seanmichael had a theme for this routine...tell me in the comments what you think it is!!
This blog blossomed in 2010 to chronicle my adventures in pole dance after weight loss surgery. Although I am pole dancing less these days, I still hike and do yoga. I sometimes still have to remind myself that the size of my body doesn't dictate my worth. I believe living a life full of gratitude and joy helps lead to a true mind, body and spirit connection. You have the power to manifest your best life!

My Sasja Lee Weekend
I wrote about Sasja Lee, aka Sassy, over two years ago. We bonded over In-N-Out on Facebook and we have been FB buddies ever since. Last weekend, Sasja came to San Francisco to dance at Volare Variety and teach some workshops, so we got to hang out a little bit.
Sasja has been tearing up the competition circuit this past year. I watched her win California Pole Dance Championship last year and she has been pretty much winning every competition since. I really don't know what she can't do. I understand she won CPDC just days after being in a horrible car accident! Beast mode. Seriously.
Anyway, after Volare, Sasja and SeanMichael rode back on BART with Rita and me, where they gave BART riders a thrilling public trans shoulder mount experience. It was so funny! I got photos but I guess video would have been better -- maybe next time! It turned out that Sasja was eager to ride BART after reading on Facebook about some of my "awesome" experiences.
The next morning, Sasja did two workshops at Twirly Girls. I pretty much judge my workshop experience based on how an instructor treats me after the class has advanced beyond my skills (which will happen in most workshops and I am okay with it). We were learning a little routine. After she taught each piece, Sasja would come around and watch each of us do the move. We finally got to a point where you would invert, pike, then go into superman. I giggled. Time for me to check out! So she gets to my pole and she says, your turn! I said, yeah right. She goes, no seriously, try it! So I went to get my woody band seat belt and I got myself upside down. She says, now let go and grab above your leg. I said, you're crazy. She said she's heard that before. HA! Look, once I'm upside down, I need all my arms and legs to hold on for dear life. I'm not ready to let go yet. I really, really appreciated her continuing to include me in the class, and I feel like I learned so much even once the routine was more advanced than I could do. I really do appreciate those instructors who continue to include me even though I can't do all the moves. It is a small effort and makes a dancer who struggles with moves like I do feel like I am still part of class. I still got some pretty awesome bruises that I've been proudly showing off to anyone who will look.
I really wish I had been able to spend more time with Sasja during her trip. I swear, I'm going to win the lottery someday and just start hanging out with these cool people who have such interesting lives!
Have you ever taken a workshop with Sasja? Tell me about it in the comments section!

That being said, for the last 20 minutes, I did just go to the back room and start stretching. Perhaps a brutal yoga class right before a 90 minute Sasja Lee workshop wasn't my best choice that day!

Poletry in Motion: Kinetic Arts Center
In November, I wrote about attending a show at Kinetic Arts Center in Oakland. I was re-reading the post and realized, I almost come off sounding like Sean Michael didn't deserve his win. When I said I felt guilty voting for him, it wasn't because he wasn't amazing, it was just because, well how do you vote against CHILDREN?! I hope no one (meaning my lovely Sean Michael) read that and took offense.
So, before the show, Kinetic Arts had set out props and fun things for people to use in photos. The winner would receive a free class. Of course, I took a ton of photos and bombarded their Facebook page. I think they only let me win so I'd stop posting pictures! (In fact, Rita and AJ were invited to come to classes as well.) I was so excited to win but then came time to choose a class! They offer so many different type of circus and aerial art classes (in addition to strengthening classes such as pilates, yoga and parkour). They welcome all ages and fitness levels. It is easy to choose which class might work for you, as the schedule clearly states the ages and level of experience required for each class.
I toyed around with trying the beginner trapeze, rope and tissue class on Sundays, but ultimately chose Pole Fit & Play with Luiza on a Thursday night. What a great class! The pole room has four poles and there were five girls in class (not including Luiza). I felt like we all shared the poles really well without interrupting the flow of class. We started with a really intense but much-needed warm-up, then Luiza taught some simple dance choreography. If there were moves that I couldn't do, she had alternatives ready. Luiza is a beautiful dancer and I really enjoyed learning from her. I also adore her because she is Sean Michael's pole mama! Everyone was very welcoming and I felt right at home.
There is so much more to do at Kinetic Arts. Of course there are pole classes, but if you want to try any kind of circus classes or at least be conditioned like a circus performer, this is the place to go! Please check out their website and let me know if you are going to take a class!

Kinetic Arts Center's I Hate The Holidays Cabaret
Last Saturday, I went to Kinetic Arts Center in Oakland to watch one of my favorite people compete in the I Hate The Holidays Cabaret. I purchased my VIP ticket so I could be guaranteed awesome seating. Rita and I even arrived super early to be at the front of the line. We took photos when we arrived, using the props to create our very own hateful holiday scene. I joked with the ladies who worked there that I already knew who I was voting for. Many acts walked around, interacting with the crowd, and setting us up for their upcoming performances. It was really cute and fun and we had lots of laughs before the curtain had even been opened.
Then the show began. Mind. Blown.
Seriously, every single performance was great. I couldn't say one bad thing about any of them. The kids were especially PHENOMENAL. I almost felt guilty voting for my Sean Michael. The hosts were so funny and kept the show moving, which can be difficult when you have different aerial acts using different apparatuses. I really don't know how to describe it. Luckily, I took video! You should watch. Literally every single act. You won't be disappointed!
I want to congratulate Sean Michael, who went on to win the competition on Sunday night! I'm so sorry I couldn't come watch! You are amazing, though, and deserved it!!! So much love for this boy!!

Twirl for a Cause: AIDS Walk San Francisco Fundraiser

I want to thank Dew Point Pole for sending a box FULL of goodies to raffle. I also want to thank our friends Lety, Rita and Mary, who donated items and baskets. Liquidpulp Photography donated three beautiful prints. Vanessa Howell donated a Bedroom Kandi goodie bag. Grace from Twirly Girls donated an hour class for ten people. Diana from Twirly Girls donated adorable Harry Potter jewelry. There was also a gift certificate from Everything Under the Rainbow. The Starlight Room donated tickets to Sunday's A Drag for auction. Plus, there were many, many other prizes that I haven't listed. Thank you thank you thank you to those who donated!

And one more thank you to anyone I may have inadvertently forgotten. My brain...it's getting old and it doesn't remember everything anymore. :-) I have never met a more giving group of people. If you missed the event and you'd like to watch a playlist of the videos, please click THIS link.

April Blog Hop: Twirly Girls at Pacific Pole Championship
For April's Blog Hop, we are talking about pole competitions. There sure are enough of them around. Thanks to the "new" day job, I haven't even updated my list in awhile, which was quickly reaching 10+ pages for only a couple of years worth of events.
In March, three+ beloved Twirly Girls participated in the Pacific Pole Championships down in Los Angeles, California. As I have been asked by Vertical Art and Fitness to write about the event, I want to keep this post fairly simple.
I do have some opinions about competitions in general, safety, timing, judging, etc....but feel as an "ambassador," I should probably keep some of the more negative opinions to myself. There have been some discussions on Facebook about fair judging. I feel like I am not on a level to comment officially, although I do feel like changes should probably be made, especially after speaking to several judges from various competitions over the last year.
Anyway, back to my lovelies from Twirly Girls. PPC spanned two days this year. Our girl, Alyssa, was participating for the very first time. She was in the category of Championship -- Level 2 -- Junior. She competed on Friday.
First, to define the competition category, here it is straight from PPC's website:
The Championship Event: This event is for those dancers wishing to compete with a traditional technical competitive program. Designed to offer competitors the type of experience found at the other major pole competitions, the focus will be on the dancer’s technique, flexibility, artistry and difficulty of tricks.
Level 2 (Intermediate): This is the appropriate level for intermediate dancers who have the ability to invert safely. In addition to the skills permitted in Level 1, dancers may invert on the pole (hips higher than head), however dancers must maintain three points of contact with the pole while inverted.
Juniors: between the ages of 18-24 on or before the date of the event.
Alyssa took FIRST! FIRST PLACE! This was her very first competition and we are SO proud of her. Check out her performance HERE. Alyssa received a very sweet compliment from Kelly Yvonne of the Choreography House when she came off stage. Unfortunately, we were watching United Pole Artists Facebook page, so we got the results as another performer (in another category) was competiting. Sorry about the silent cheers and the jumping in our seats!!
Diana was next to compete, but not until Saturday. Diana competed in PPC last year, so this was her second time participating in this event. Diana competed in the Entertainment -- Level 3 -- Junior/Senior division.
The Entertainment Event: This event is focused less on the difficulty of the tricks executed and more on the dancer’s ability to interpret a piece of music to provide a comical or upbeat performance.
Level 3 (Advanced): This is the appropriate level for the more advanced pole dancer who can invert and perform movements such as handsprings or ayashas safely and securely. Dancers at this level may perform any tricks and any inversions.
Seniors: between the ages of 25-39 on or before the date of the event.
Diana did not place in the top three but she did really well, especially after the line-up was changed at the last minute and the person who performed right before her was another person named Diana who also did a zombie-themed routine. Seriously?! How does THAT happen?? That would have totally ruined my day but Diana came out and still rocked it. Check out our Diana's performance HERE.
Last up from the Twirly Tribe was Sean Michael. (Side note: I love this boy. I take Sean Michael's class at Twirly Girls on Saturdays. If you are in the area and looking for a good class, give it a try.) Sean Michael competed Saturday evening. He was in the Championship -- Level 3 -- Male division. There were only two competitors in this division. Their scores were separated by two-tenths of a point. Sean Michael, unfortunately, placed second. I felt like the winner had a very "safe" routine. Sean Michael's routine was strong, original and fun to watch. Check it out HERE.
I absolutely must give an honorable mention to Twirly Girls friends Kate Cotruvo (Club Etak) and Tiffany Rose Mockler (Poletential). We love our Nor Cal Pole Posse. They both did a great job at the competition! You can see Kate's competition routines below:
Kate Entertainment Level 3

Congrats to all competitors. By my count, almost 150 people competed that weekend. I saw a lot of slippery poles and I give props to those who put themselves out there and do this!

For the LOVE of Pole
This month, for the blog hop, we are talking about love. That can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. I struggle with the concept of love. I didn't grow up with a super lovey huggy family, so I am not super affectionate and loving. It's something I struggle with. Don't get me wrong, I can love me the shit outta some cake, but I have a harder time connecting with people. I have my public persona and my private persona. And even in close relationships, I have a hard time letting that private persona out.
So today, in order to avoid some of my issues, I'll be talking about the love of pole. I have been struggling in my relationship with the pole. I am not the strongest in tricks, nor am I experienced as a dancer. So, I feel like I don't have as much to offer when I perform. I have worked really hard on my flow and being aware of my arms and legs, so that they look "pretty" when I move them. But most of my performances are all smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that the most advance pole move I usually do is a back hook spin. When performing in front of non-polers, I can still fairly impress people.
This weekend was a big one for me in my pole life.
Saturday, Sean Michael took over the Triple Tease (Tricks, Twirls and Transitions) class on Saturday mornings. I had a really great class. He is so patient and was able to talk me into moves that I haven't been able to do before. I also learned some new spins. And he gave me some exercises to help with strength. I have a list a mile long of pole goals, but I am starting with basics. I need a strong climb and a strong sit. I am really excited to get back into a regular class. Since starting my job in San Francisco, I haven't been able to go to the Wednesday night class. I want to feel like I am continuing to learn so that I can teach my Monday night class, Boys, Girls and Twirls, some new moves.
Saturday night, we set the x-stage up for Robert's fundraiser. I performed in front of a non-Twirly Girl audience! I performed in front of family and friends! It was really cool. I will write more about that later. It was a really exciting night, though, and it further solidified my love of pole.
On Sunday, I took a choreography workshop with Amber Richard. I love that Amber is tall like me, and has really strong and beautiful legs. In LA, she teaches a class called Rock Hard Bodies. And she has one. But she's also still very feminine. You can tell that she's strong and in amazing shape. But her muscles aren't so ridiculously pronounced that she looks like a man. Anyway, we worked on a little routine. Even though I have a lot of strength to build before I can make my moves look like hers (if I ever do...she has a background in ballet and is way more flexible than I am), I was able to struggle into each of the moves she taught, even if only for a few seconds.
I realize I come on here every six months or so talking about how I've found my motivation, but this time I really do need to stick to a fitness routine, which will help me get stronger for pole. I did join the 24 Hour Fitness near my house and am going to start hitting up some cycle classes to help get this big ol' legs in shape. I do love pole dancing. Even though I have been tired and grumpy lately, I love coming to class and smiling and laughing. So, for the love of pole, I will stick to my routine so I can meet my goals. Finally!
