The History of Pole Dance, Part Three

I haven't updated The History of Pole Dance in quite awhile.  It does remain my most popular post, however, with over 12,000 clicks as of the posting of this update.  In that piece, I really just re-posted stories from around the web about how different people believed modern day pole dancing came to be.  The history of pole may be related but is separate from the future of pole and the potential splitting or separation of sensual pole dance from pole fitness/sport.

Some of those articles listed Chinese Pole, Mallakhamb and/or May Pole/fertility dances as being part of the history of modern day pole dance.  I have since seen many posts from those who dispute those claims.  I believe Claire from The Pole Story made a statement about this before, but can't find the post now.

In part 2, I again found some pieces that were on the right track and some that were slightly off.

I also wrote a piece for ThePoleDancingShop.com, where I again listed types of pole that many feel do not belong in the history of pole dance.

As part of my research for an upcoming article about Fawnia Dietrich, who is, in my eyes, the mother of modern pole, I found HER description of how pole dancing came to be.  It does mirror some of the other sites already quoted but I liked how it was laid out, so I wanted to post it here anyway:

"Pole dancing has been around for longer than you may think. Here is a short history on how pole dancing has evolved. Pole dancing originated in the 1920's at height of the American depression. Traveling fairs would go from town to town entertaining the crowds. As part of the fair there would many different types of sides shows in small tents surrounding the main tent. One particular tent housed the erotic Hoochi Coochi dancers. The word Hoochi Coochi originates from the hip movement performed by the Hochi Coochi dancers, the equivalent of the bump and grind today day. The girls would dance suggestively on a small stage in front of crowds of cheering. Due to size of the tent, the tent pole would be situated at the very edge of the stage. The dancer would approach the tent pole and begin to dance with it. The tent pole became known, as the dance pole, which still exists today, be it in a more technically advanced and socially acceptable form. Pole dancing gradually began evolving from tents to bars as burlesque became more acceptable in 1950's, nothing much was heard until the 1980's when pole dancing and striptease became popular in Canada and then the USA. 1990's saw Miss Fawnia Dietrich (Canadian, formally Fawnia Mondey) take the art of pole dancing and begin teaching this to the every day woman. She produced the first instructional pole fitness and dance DVD. 2000 - current have been the most promising years. Pole dancing has evolved into different genres, exotic, empowering and pole fitness. There is a great deal of difference between them and as the student you should try them all. The UK POLE FEDERATION formed in 2005 celebrates all of these, as does the Pole Fitness Association, formed in 2009. Pole dancers across the world hope that 2010 - 2020 will see pole dancing accepted as a reputable form of dance, fitness and exercise and without a doubt in the Olympic Games. Vertical Dance – Pole Fitness Studio."

KT Coates, another pioneer of pole, also recently posted on her Facebook page:

"I have just been asked where I thought the pole we do today came from. It was suggested that its came from Chinese pole and the makalamb (or however you spell it). I don't know who said it was the latter but its not true. While the pole we know and love today has influences of circus, gymnastics, street, ballet it came from the strip clubs! I am sure people will find it ironic that I think that but its true. If pole originated from them then it would be predominately a male activity and be far more acceptable, but its not. However the future of pole will be so different and it will always be when you have so many different influences it can not help but take on a different dimension."

The future of pole includes plus-sized polers
So perhaps modern pole dance didn't COME FROM Chinese Pole or Mallakhamb (I know I can't spell that damn word either), but arguments could certainly be made to say that, with the direction in which competitions are going lately, Chinese pole especially is definitely influencing competitors today.

Soon, I am going to have a reactionary post to the recent California Pole Dance Championships and will discuss where I think pole is headed in the future.  I would love, in the meantime, to get your reaction to this post.  How do you feel about both the history and the future of modern day pole dance?

March post for The Pole Dancing Shop

We all have our names for them. Pole Kisses. Pole Scars. Badges of Honor. BRUISES. No matter how hard you try, especially when you're new to the game of pole dance, you are bound to end up with some bruises. Some people hide them, trying to explain that they are not, in fact, being abused. Others wear them like badges of honor and courage, earned in the battle against the cold steel of their pole.

February post for The Pole Dancing Shop

Have you ever attended a workshop with an instructor from another country?  It is so exciting.  Learning techniques and moves that might not be as common in your territory.  Hearing the various names for the same moves.  Sharing stories about traveling the world.  Have you ever wondered what kind of work goes into bringing over a guest instructor?

Pole Sport Organization Competitions

As the pole community continues to grow, so do your options if you'd like to compete. A short time ago, in the United States, your competition options were essentially limited to USPDF and APFC. The Midwest competition popped up two years ago and, in 2012, the Pacific Pole Championship was born in California. The brainchild of Amy Guion and Bayleigh Pettigrew, this family of competitions has grown into much more. Known as the Pole Sport Organization, they now host competitions around the United States.

Fulfilling Your Pole Dancing Wish List

The great thing about pole is that it stimulates the mind, body and soul. The holidays will come and go, and some of us will set New Years Resolutions. So, let's talk about that pole wish list!

 Pole Dance To Be Strong

I remember my doctor telling me once to stop weight training and start hitting the treadmill if I wanted to lose weight. I was a little surprised -- he looked like a bit of a meathead himself with his huge biceps -- but you do what your doctor tells you, right? Well, maybe not always! We aren't trying to give you medical advice here at The Pole Dancing Shop, but we'd like to share some information that might help you understand why weight training is important.

November posts for The Pole Dancing Shop

We were saddened to hear this week that one of our clothing suppliers, Pole Skivvies, will no longer be making their specialized pole dance friendly clothing. Although we don't believe the bad economy has anything to do with Pole Skivvies closing its doors, it does bring to the forefront of our minds the health of the industry and how we can keep it strong.

There are many variations of pole dance. Some of us came from dance backgrounds, so those genres influence how we pole: ballet, lyrical, hip hop…and so on. Some of us embrace the sexy side. Some of us celebrate the physical strength required to perform advanced tricks. Some of us just enjoy the dance. There comes a point in each pole dancer’s life where you reveal to someone that you pole dance and they respond with a blank stare. How we reveal our supposedly salacious hobby is different for each person to which we "come out." How did you “out” yourself as a pole dancer to your friends and family (and co-workers)?

October Posts For The Pole Dancing Shop

Pole Warm-Up:  Stretching Doesn't Count

I have attended a few pole jams lately where pole dancers from different studios get together to dance and teach each other fun tricks. I have been surprised by the number of people who seem to think that stretching is a warm-up. At one event, the coordinator called out, "okay, let's warm up!" And six girls plopped down on to the ground and started stretching.

September posts for The Pole Dancing Shop

We have all probably watched a pole dance video on YouTube and thought to ourselves, "That move will be mine!" Jenyne Butterfly and the Iguana Walk. Natasha Wang and the Fonji. There are so many advanced moves that brand new pole dancers are not ready to try. Sure, some of us may have the physical strength to muscle into a move, but pole dancing requires the use of a different set of muscles than most activities. And that's how we get hurt. So, we need to have patience and learn progression!

Pole Expo Las Vegas 2012

September 6-9, 2012, The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada will be taken over by pole dancers from all over the world for Pole Expo!

Pole Expo was organized by Fawnia Dietrich, founder of Pole Fitness Studio in Las Vegas.  As you may remember from our post, A Brief History of Pole Dance, Fawnia opened the first exotic dance school in Canada in 1994.  She is considered one of the pioneers of bringing pole to the mainstream.

July posts for The Pole Dancing Shop

Here are my contributions to ThePoleDancingShop.com for July:

Discussing Categories of Pole Dance

There has been a push by some to take the "sexy" out of pole and create a fitness or tricks based style of vertical gymnastics in order to get our sport into the Olympics.  That got us at The Pole Dancing Shop talking about different styles of pole dance.  For the purpose of this blog, we are going to talk about these styles: Pole Fitness/Sport, Pole Dance/Artistic, Pole Erotic and Pole Exotic.  Please understand these are only opinions.  We understand this may be a hot button issue and welcome comments from all sides.  But please remember to keep it respectful because we are all beautiful pole dancers and we should support each other's styles!

World Pole Sport Championships - London 2012

On July 19th and 20th, just days before the 2012 Summer Olympics were scheduled to open, the International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF) hosted the World Pole Sports Championship in London.  The goal of the competition was to lay the groundwork to eventually get pole fitness into the Olympics: "Far from being just about pole dancing, pole sports or 'vertical gymnastics,' requires strength, athleticism, creativity, and grace.  And pole sports athletes across the world are ready to get their sport recognized by the greatest sporting event in the world, the Olympic Games."

June Posts for The Pole Dancing Shop

Here are my blogs for June on www.ThePoleDancingShop.com:

What's Your Pole Niche:

The most fantastic thing about pole dancing is the fact that everyone is different and each dancer has their strong suit.  Some are amazing at the flow and dance. Some love pulling off jaw-dropping tricks. Others can easily combine the two in the most beautiful way. While trying to find your way in the pole dancing world, you should ask yourself a question:  What's your niche?

May posts for The Pole Dancing Shop

If you missed the April post, HERE it is!

Here are my May posts for www.ThePoleDancingShop.com:

Pole Dancing In Your Mind:
http://www.thepoledancingshop.com/pole-dancing-in-your-mind/#.T8Ux9lIhOSo

There has been much discussion about the mental side of pole dancing here on The Pole Dancing Shop's blog.  Check out "Overcoming Your Pole Dancing Fears", "Pole Dancing Mamas" or "Powerful Bodies, Even More Powerful Minds".

We don't want to knock other forms of working out, but lifting weights or running on a treadmill just can't compare to pole dancing.  We don't merely mean the fact that pole dancing is a total body workout.  There is so much that can hold us back:  Our fear of falling during a spin or invert; our worries about how others might perceive our potentially sexy workout; our concerns about how our pastime might affect our children.  Pole dancing is a very mental sport!

Excuse Me, That's My Pole:
http://www.thepoledancingshop.com/excuse-me-thats-my-pole/#.T8UyU1IhOSo

Recently, we posted about how pole dancing can be a very mental sport.  It is funny how we get set in our ways.  We drive the same routes each day.  We have our favorite outfits and shoes.  When we arrive at class, whether it is pole, yoga or any other class, we like to claim "our" spot.  We like our mat in the back, dark corner, or we like the pole furthest from the air conditioning vent.

What happens when you arrive at class and someone is in your spot?  Sometimes that pushes you right out of your comfort zone.  And that's not always a bad thing!

Pole Show LA Interviews and Performance Videos

In January, Lorita Productions attended Pole Show LA on behalf of The Pole Dancing Shop.  I wanted to post interview and performance videos in one place, so here we go!

The show started with “The Honey Fall Girls”, which was choreographed by Leigh Ann Reilly (owner of BeSpun) and included five BeSpun dancers: Andrewa Britz, Kate Chanthanakaew, Emma Danoff, Yvonne Huffman-Lutz and Cash Roses.  Their costumes, designed by Kelly Maglia, were adorable.  They also featured Glitter Heels, which are made by BeSpun instructor, Tiffany Hayden.

Ariel Jacobs:

The first headliner was Prana, who is from Paris, France.  She has been pole dancing since 2008 and teaches at Pole Dance Paris.  Her routine was very wild cat-like.  She is so strong and beautiful to watch.

Interview with Prana:

Alice Hodge:

Unfortunately, this video was blocked due to copyright issues with the song.

BeSpun’s manager, Amy Guion was next in a piece called “A Long time ago, in a desert far, far away.”  It started with contortionist Fiona Luna and Amy’s partner David Garcia.  The pole portion was set to the Christina Aguilera song, Genie in a Bottle.  It was a really cute routine and really showcased Amy’s flexibility.

Interview with Amy Guion:

Lena Lockerby:

Zoraya Judd was the second headliner.  If you have not seen Zoraya perform, you really need to watch her.  She is an outstanding performer.  From her hair and make-up to her routine.  She took it to the next level when her husband Nic joined her on stage to hand over a python snake.  She finished her routine on the pole with a snake wrapped around her neck.

D'Lorian "Bad Azz" Fox:

Interview with Bad Azz:

The next piece was called Gemini 3000 and included BeSpun dancers Sergia Louise Anderson, Tami Brandel, Jennifer Jim and Lacy McGarry.  One of the highlights was when all four performers were spinning on one pole.

Interview with Jennifer Kim:

Becca Armijo:

Flying Laura Martin absolutely rocked the show.  She pulled out an amazing and completely unexpected hip hop routine with backup dancers, Marta Karwowska and Isabella Konald.  Flying Laura is another performer that you must see in person if you can.  She is such a powerhouse.

Jess Leah:

Leigh Ann Reilly was next with “In the Night.”  It included BeSpun dancers Alex Catalano, Pamela Morency and Angela Relucio.   Leigh Ann started the performance on a motorcycle and later rocked a shoulder stand on it.

Interview with Leigh Ann Reilly:

Estee Zakar started her performance in a really cool cat mask.  She is so strong and her routine was really fun to watch.  She does some kind of Iron-X round about that is hard to explain but amazing to watch.

Amber Richard:

Interview with Amber Richard:

Steven Retchless was next.  His routine was ballet-based and so beautiful. Sadly, the sound was still out, although it gave us an opportunity to enjoy his movement.

Interview with Steven Retchless:

Kelly Maglia:

The next routine, “Ligature”, was based on Amy Guion’s third-place 2011 California Pole Dance Championship routine.  It involved four dancers: Paula Cavajal, Christine Fields, Tracey Mueller and Lisa Wilhoit.  It included dominatrix inspired costumes and red ropes, from which the dancers could hang from the poles.

Breezelle Fox:

Natasha Wang based the character in her routine on a spider that conquers the pole.  Natasha is definitely the sweetheart of pole dancing and we always love watching her performances.  With the sound still not working properly, it did allow the crowd to truly take in her movements.

Interview with Natasha Wang:

Margarita Evans:

[need video]

“Wonderland” was an Alice-in-Wonderland inspire routine danced by Audra Bennett, Lindsey Kimura, Sienna Spalding and Adrienne Strauss.  Sienna also wrote and performed the music for the piece and created the art in the background.  It was a really fun routine.  Happily, the  speakers started working again about half way through their performance.

Interview with Lindsey X-Pole:

Interview with Sienna Spalding:

Interview with Adrienne Strauss:

Jennifer Strand:

Amber Kittle amazed us all by starting her routine on the ceiling in a 20-foot death lay.  Her performance was so fast and athletic.  She had some designs on her body highlighted with a black light, but you didn’t notice them because she moved so quickly.  This girl requires a sturdy pole that connects to the ceiling to do her impressive walk on the ceiling.  No wonder she was not able to compete in 2011′s California Pole Dance Championship on X-Stages!

Interview with Amber Kittle:

Tiffany Hayden:

Interview with Tiffany Hayden:

Karol Helms and Alethea Austin teamed up for “Education.”  Alethea was almost unrecognizable at first in a black wig.  Their school girl-themed doubles routine rocked the house and included backup dancers Andrea Britz, Ariel Jacobs, Valarie Miller, Lana Sales, Melissa Schrader and Jennifer Vigil.

Dana Davidson:

Jenyne Butterfly closed the show.  She is such a sweetheart and is always the crowd favorite.  She claimed earlier in the night that she had not been on the pole much in the previous two months, but you couldn’t tell by the performance she gave.  She has definitely earned the title of “Pole Queen!”

Bonus videos:

Nadia Sharif (recent winner of National Aerial Pole Artist Championship), who wasn't able to perform at Pole Show LA (she explains here):

Lorita Productions and Pole Show LA

So, as you probably know by now, Rita, Andrew (Banny) and I went to LA for Pole Show LA.  We called ourselves Team Honey Badger, then Honey Badger Productions.  A lot of people are using that idea, so now we are Lorita Productions.

While there, we did some interviews on behalf of The Pole Dancing Shop.  We have posts all over so I wanted to put them all in one place.

The Pole Dancing Shop - Men on the Pole

I did a very unscientific poll on Facebook and Twitter recently, asking what women thought of men coming to their pole dancing classes. The response was mixed -- and some were very passionate about it.
