I'm on the Fear of Flight blog!

A few months back, I chatted with Veruca from the Fear of Flight blog.  We had a great conversation and she released a blog with the interview!

So, it’s hard because I like to say pole dance is for everybody but I also can fully recognize that it works better for different bodies and not even just thinner bodies but even shorter bodies although I think that you have to find out what works for you because tall people will say “Oh well when you do this move, it’s really hard to have long legs” and short people will say “Well if I have long legs I can do this move”, so for me it’s finding the move that is going to work for you and then working on it. I shocked everybody I think when I did my first hand stand and I swear to God my arms were going to fall off the first time I did it because as soon as I got upside down all the air went out of my body and my blood stopped pumping but I did it. That’s my thing am I lifting into it properly; absolutely not but I can do a hand stand and I can shock the shit out of people and that’s what I do. So I’m trying to take the moves that work for me and become better and get stronger at those moves because I’m probably never going to; like I’ll never do a spatchcock I can guarantee that and that’s not being negative, that’s just being honest and realistic.

Confessions of a Twirly Girl Turns Two!

Happy bloggerversary to me.  A little over two years ago, I wrote my very first blog.  Ever.  Confessions of a Twirly Girl has given me an amazing outlet.  Enter the Twirling Viking Warrior.  Also known as lolorashel.  And a monster was born.  :-)

Here's my very first post from January 29, 2010:  http://lolorashel.blogspot.com/2010/01/tales-from-pole.html

Here's my first anniversary post:  http://lolorashel.blogspot.com/2011/03/yer-mom.html

I am now up to 73 "followers" on Blogger.  However, I have 2,000 Facebook friends and over 1,200 followers on Twitter.  I am on tumblr and pinterest.  Between all of the cross-posts, I have had over 60,000 hits on my blog.  I average 300 hits per day.  I apparently also have Klout (today my score was up to 62...whatever that actually means).  I am writing for Twirly Girls and a couple of other shall-remain-unnamed studios.  I am also writing for The Pole Dancing Shop.  I have written various guest blogs for other websites.  I am working with Social Sonar and I am their main blogger on social media topics.  I will soon have published articles in Vertical Art and Fitness Magazine

I swore that I was going to brand myself, and it certainly seems to be happening.  Projects for other companies have morphed into starting Lorita Productions so that Rita, Andrew and I (GO TEAM HONEY BADGER) can work as a team to produce videos and photos for the pole community.

I am not only blogging about pole dancing but I am now teaching two classes at week at Twirly Girls.  I still have my day job, but I am otherwise immersed in pole.  I have met some really awesome people and have checked out some fun studios and events.  I feel very lucky to have the opportunities being presented to me now.  And I owe it all to Bel, Twirly Girls and this blog.

I have learned a lot in the last two years.  About pole dancing.  About people.  About blogging in general.  Although its very exciting to have a blog that receives 200-600 hits per day...writing provides me with a much-needed outlet, which I would still receive if no one was reading anything I wrote.  However, it is so satisfying to meet people at events or receive e-mails from people who hear my voice and feel their own story is being told as well.  It is fun to talk to pole-celebrities, but I am very much interested in the everyday pole dancers who are like me.

So thank you to everyone who has made my blog a success.  I look forward to some traveling so I can meet even more pole friends.  Please let me know where you are so I can add you to my map of planned pole travels!

lolorashel, Pole Dance Italy and Pole Show LA

Since I was already going to Pole Show LA, I wrote up a little review for my good friend Valentina at Pole Dance Italy!  She even translated it to Italian.  I feel so fancy!!  Thank you for posting my write-up on your site, Valentina!!!!!!

Find below the ENGLISH VERSION

On Saturday, January 28, 2012, over 400 people gathered at BeSpun in Hollywood, California for their third annual Pole Show LA.   It was a sold out show with a line around the block.  The event was sponsored The Pole Dancing ShopX-PoleMighty GripDew Point and Pole Expo Las Vegas. The showcase included headliners from all over the world, instructors and students from BeSpun, and other notable pole dancers from the area.

Between each performance, there was a short solo by dancers while the pole cleaners did their work.  The soloists included Ariel Jacobs (Alethea Austin’s sister), Alice Hodge, Lena Lockerby, Josiah “Bad Azz” Grant aka Sir D’Lorian Fox (instructor at BeSpun), Becca Armijo (Pole Pumas), Jess Leah (reportedly a brand new pole dancer), Amber Richard (instructor at BeSpun and The Choreography House), Kelly Maglia (who also made many of the costumes), Breezelle Fox (amazing booty poppin’ routine), Margarita Evans, Jennifer Strand, Tiffany Hayden (Glitter Heels), and Dana Davidson.

The show started with “The Honey Fall Girls”, which was choreographed by Leigh Ann Reilly (owner of BeSpun) and included five BeSpun dancers: Andrewa Britz, Kate Chanthanakaew, Emma Danoff, Yvonne Huffman-Lutz and Cash Roses.  Their costumes, designed by Kelly Maglia, were adorable.  They also featured Glitter Heels, which are made by BeSpun instructor, Tiffany Hayden.

The Honey Falls Girls

The first headliner was Prana, who is from Paris, France.  She has been pole dancing since 2008 and teaches at Pole Dance Paris.  Her routine was very wild cat-like.  She is so strong and beautiful to watch.

Prana Pole Show LA

BeSpun’s manager, Amy Guion was next in a piece called “A Long time ago, in a desert far, far away.”  It started with contortionist Fiona Luna and Amy’s partner David Garcia.  The pole portion was set to the Christina Aguilera song, Genie in a Bottle.  It was a really cute routine and really showcased Amy’s flexibility.

Amy Guion Pole Show LA

Zoraya Judd was the second headliner.  If you have not seen Zoraya perform, you really need to watch her.  She is an outstanding performer.  From her hair and make-up to her routine.  She took it to the next level when her husband Nic joined her on stage to hand over a python snake.  She finished her routine on the pole with a snake wrapped around her neck.

Zoraya Judd Pole Show LA

The next piece was called Gemini 3000 and included BeSpun dancers Sergia Louise Anderson, Tami Brandel, Jennifer Jim and Lacy McGarry.  One of the highlights was when all four performers were spinning on one pole.

Gemini 3000 Pole Show LA

Flying Laura Martin absolutely rocked the show.  She pulled out an amazing and completely unexpected hip hop routine with backup dancers, Marta Karwowska and Isabella Konald.  Flying Laura is another performer that you must see in person if you can.  She is such a powerhouse.

Flying Laura Pole Show LA

Leigh Ann Reilly was next with “In the Night.”  It included BeSpun dancers Alex Catalano, Pamela Morency and Angela Relucio.   Leigh Ann started the performance on a motorcycle and later rocked a shoulder stand on it.

Leigh Ann Reilly Pole Show LA

Unfortunately, the sound system went out during Leigh Ann’s performance and an early intermission was called, causing a small change in the lineup.  Even when the performances started again, the sound system was not fixed and most could not hear the one working speaker that appeared to be back stage.

Estee Zakar started her performance in a really cool cat mask.  She is so strong and her routine was really fun to watch.  She does some kind of Iron-X round about that is hard to explain but amazing to watch.

Estee Zakar Pole Show LA

Steven Retchless was next.  His routine was ballet-based and so beautiful. Sadly, the sound was still out, although it gave us an opportunity to enjoy his movement.

Steven Retchless Pole Show LA

The next routine, “Ligature”, was based on Amy Guion’s third-place 2011 California Pole Dance Championship routine.  It involved four dancers: Paula Cavajal, Christine Fields, Tracey Mueller and Lisa Wilhoit.  It included dominatrix inspired costumes and red ropes, from which the dancers could hang from the poles.

Natasha Wang based the character in her routine on a spider that conquers the pole.  Natasha is definitely the sweetheart of pole dancing and we always love watching her performances.  With the sound still not working properly, it did allow the crowd to truly take in her movements.

Natasha Wang Pole Show LA

“Wonderland” was an Alice-in-Wonderland inspire routine danced by Audra Bennett, Lindsey Kimura, Sienna Spalding and Adrienne Strauss.  Adrienne also wrote and performed the music for the piece and created the art in the background.  It was a really fun routine.  Happily, the  speakers started working again about half way through their performance.

Wonderland Pole Show La

Amber Kittle amazed us all by starting her routine on the ceiling in a 20-foot death lay.  Her performance was so fast and athletic.  She had some designs on her body highlighted with a black light, but you didn’t notice them because she moved so quickly.  This girl requires a sturdy pole that connects to the ceiling to do her impressive walk on the ceiling.  No wonder she was not able to compete in 2011′s California Pole Dance Championship on X-Stages!

Amber Kittle Pole Show La

Karol Helms and Alethea Austin teamed up for “Education.”  Alethea was almost unrecognizable at first in a black wig.  Their school girl-themed doubles routine rocked the house and included backup dancers Andrea Britz, Ariel Jacobs, Valarie Miller, Lana Sales, Melissa Schrader and Jennifer Vigil.

Karol Helms and Alethea Austin Pole Show LA

Jenyne Butterfly closed the show.  She is such a sweetheart and is always the crowd favorite.  She claimed earlier in the night that she had not been on the pole much in the previous two months, but you couldn’t tell by the performance she gave.  She has definitely earned the title of “Pole Queen!”

Jenyne Butterfly Pole Show LA

Sure, it was slightly frustrating for many people due to spacing and seating issues (pillars blocked the view for some and those standing were packed in like sardines).  And the speakers being out for a good portion of the show was also disappointing.  But the performances were top notch and we were all lucky to have been able to witness that many amazing pole performers in one place.

Power of Pole for ME!

I subject everyone else to my questions so I thought I would answer them too.  :-)

How long have you been pole dancing?

I just passed the two year mark at Twirly Girls!  I first tried a class at S Factor about three years ago but the distance was too far to travel on a weekly basis so I didn't start dancing on a regular basis until I found Twirly Girls in December 2009.

What first drew you to try it?

My first introduction to pole dancing for fitness was when OC Pole Fitness friended me on MYSPACE maybe four or five years ago (I canceled my MySpace account at least two years ago, and I was on there for awhile so I'm guessing it was over four years ago).  I was intrigued but they were in Southern California (and I'm in Northern California), so I couldn't try it out.  I then heard some girls from S Factor on the radio in San Francisco and decided it was something I wanted to try.

Where do you take classes?

Twirly Girls Pole Fitness in Pleasanton, California.

Do you have a pole at home?

I do although I don't have it up right now.  It's in my front room and sometimes it gets too crowded.  :-/

How often do you pole?

Currently, I am training to teach so I'm scheduled to be at the studio four days a week!

What else do you do to keep your body in shape to pole?

I'm using pilates reformer to work on strengthening my core.  I am also doing the Twirly Tuff conditioning program twice a week.  I need a little more cardio and should get a jog in there at least once a week but I'm lazy.  I also try to hit yoga at least twice a week.

Do you like to dance in shoes or barefoot?

I have shoe envy.  I love how shoes look but I can't walk in them very well so I look more natural when I dance barefoot.

How do you deal with dry skin on pole days and on off-pole days?

Many dancers have suggested a couple of the Vaseline lotions (I use Vaseline Total Moisture as suggested by Natasha Wang).  I have psoriasis on my elbows (its an autoimmune disease that causes skin to grow faster than normal in certain places, which leaves ugly dead skin).  Skipping lotion on pole days just bums me out because then I feel all scaly and nasty.  If I am putting lotion on in the morning and not poling until night time, I will put a tiny bit of the Vaseline lotion on my elbows.  I will also put face lotion on but won't put lotion on any other part of my body.  If I am poling in the morning, I just go without and suffer.  My dry skin issue is the reason I ask everyone this question.  :-)

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I use Mighty Grip on occasion but usually try to just stick myself to the pole.  I often use Dr. Bronner's soap in the shower to kind of give my skin a little stick without anything else.

Where do you buy your pole clothes?

I have a pair of Pole Skivvies shorts.  I also have some Capezio dance shorts.  For the most part, I just wear my Twirly Girls shirts and regular old sports bras.

What is your favorite song to dance to right now?

No favorite right now.  I'm feeling a little discouraged because I felt like in December I was dancing so much better than I am in January.  So when I'm in one of "those" moods, I have no favorite songs.  :-)

How do you feel like pole has improved or changed your life?

Bel and Twiry Girls have completely changed my life.  Even though my weight is higher than I'd like it to be, I can't imagine how much higher it would be if I didn't have pole in my life.  I can't wait for Twirly Tuff to transform me so I can unveil the BODY THAT POLE BUILT.  So many doors are being opened for me right now.  It's a little surreal.  I am very excited about the opportunities being presented to me through pole dancing and writing this blog.  My blog is very close to 50,000 views.  Thank you to every single person who has taken the time to read my posts.  Pole Dancers Unite!  You all rock my socks off!

Power of Pole: Meet Tracey

I have a canned set of questions for the pole dancers on my blog.  For you, Miss Tracey, I just felt like a more personal touch was needed.  The reason I fell in love with Twirly Girls was because it was so much like a family -- everyone is so supportive of each other.  You are battling cancer and I have watched the ladies at Poletential band together to create Team Pink Tracey to help you get through chemo and make sure you and your family are being cared for.  I guess that is more of a statement than a question...so please tell us what Poletential means to you.

The easiest way to explain would be to just say be in the studio and experience it.  I unlocked my sense of self in that studio.  If you can imagine a sanctuary.  A place where you can feel free of all worries for an hour or two.  Where you can look in the mirror, see your beauty not for another but for yourself.  Where you can put on stilettos and be sexy, release your inner goddess.  Where you can be barefoot, feel the floor and the metal pole, find your strength.  Where you can lose yourself in music.  This is what Poletential is for me.   And in there, I met the strongest and the bravest of women.  When I got the news of my diagnosis, these amazing women came together a formed a support chain around me and my boys.  They held me when I cried, did an extreme twirl make over on my place to make it calm and peaceful, bonded with my boys, held my hand at the appointments, spent nights with me after chemo, shaved my head, and so much more. This family, my Poletential family helped me learn how to survive and to live.

I understand there is a Zumba fundraiser coming up in October.  Please tell us about that!

I am so fortunate to have so much support.  One of the Poletential instructors is also a Zumba instructors.  With other Zumba instructors, a few other phenomenal women and Poletential, they put together this amazing event.  For me, it is my chance to say thank you. I am so grateful.

The ladies of Poletential set up a Facebook Group for you -- Team Pink Tracey.  Facebook really does make the world a little smaller (that's how *I* heard your story).  I imagine you've met some interesting people through the group!  Are there any you'd like to mention?

I’ve met friends of friends who have been through similar breast cancer and other disease/illness experiences. Through messages, I’ve met Sean O’Connor who founded Pink Pole Power.  Through Pink Pole Power, I connected with two women, Kathleen and Melissa who have gone through and are going though their own breast cancer battles. They have been an inspiration for me.

I see Christina asking people to take your boys to different events.  It sounds like you have awesome boys, which means you must be a great mother.  How are they handling everything?

I have two great boys, 7 and 13.  I am so proud of them.  I didn’t shelter or hide this from them, nor did I push it on them.  At every step there was honesty. They knew about the surgery, when I shaved my head, knew when and the effects of chemo, etc.  We have our moments when this is difficult to handle.  But they have a team, a team pink who is a phone call away, who visits with them, who teaches them, who loves them and who is just there for them.

It sounds like your prognosis is very good and you are now finished with chemotherapy.  What is the next step?

CHEMO IS DONE (I love saying that)!  The next phase will be the second reconstruction surgery in November.  I had a bi-lateral mastectomy with expander implants in June. Second surgery will replace the expander implants.  After surgery, I will take a 5 year drug called Tamoxifen and recover as quickly as a can so I can pole.

I know you are taking some time off now.  Are you excited to get back on the pole?

I miss it so much.  I have been doing physical therapy since the first surgery.  I was strong enough to do my first pole class since the diagnosis tonight.  The feeling is indescribable (I had happy tears tonight).  I know it will be shortlived.  I will rehab again after the November surgery.

How long have you danced with Poletential?

I believe I started around November 2009 and was instantly hooked.

What other aerial arts classes have you tried?

I was unable to try aerial arts.  I got the diagnosis just as aerial came to Poletential.  But I can’t wait to try!

Have you ever taught pole?

No.

Do you generally like to dance with heels or barefoot?

I generally dance barefoot, but I love the moments in heels.

Do you have a favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I generally don’t use grip aide, but have tried Dry Hands.

Is there a pole-friendly moisturizer that you can recommend?

I have not tried one. But that is definitely something to look into when I come back full force!

What kind of music do you like to dance to?

I don’t have a specific type of music that I like.  It’s usually the song, the mood and the story.

Do you have anything else you'd like to share?

Two things I learned at Poletential:  Lose yourself in the music and Go Big or Go Home.  This I have learned applies to pole and to life.

Randomly, you get thrown curveballs (learned that from CK/Poletential too!), and sometimes those curveballs come out of left field and so completely unexpected.  You can take a step back and breathe or you can swing with all your might and hit it out of the park. Either option is ok.

To my team, to my twirl girls, to Poletential, to CK (Christina), to the pole community, Thank you.

Studio Spotlight: Empowerment Through Exotic Dance!

I first started hearing whispers about Mary Ellyn and Empowerment Through Exotic Dance as the Grande Dames (pole dancers over 40) were getting excited about The Midwest Pole Dance Competition earlier this year.  I wanted to include her in our circle of pole sisters, so here she is!

What is your fitness background?

I have a group exercise certification through AFAA.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

Off the pole I work out 5-7 days per week...about 30 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training and 45 minutes of stretching each session. On the pole I teach 12 hours a week plus choreograph and practice outside of classes.

What kind of diet do you follow?

Mostly low carb dieting.

Do you have a dance background?

Never took any serious dance lessons. Started at Fred Astaire once and dropped out after a couple of weeks.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I don't compete but this year we launched the Midwest Pole Dance Competition in August.

What interested you about pole dancing?

The fun mixed with the fabulous support among the women (and now men) in classes.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

Not really though I tend to personally lean toward using the term pole dancing. Even the fitness aspect has a dance element to it and all dance is a form of fitness.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

I think it's ridiculous. There is no denying that at least a portion of our pole moves are rooted in the stripper industry and there is no shame in a woman's sensuality. I don't endorse the side of the industry which exploits women but I also support a woman's choice to work in any field she wishes. While I understand that pole dancing in it's earliest form was Mallakhamb and Chinese pole, I don't believe that the modern pole dance school started up because of Mallakhamb! I was around when pole dancing burst into mainstream and we had never even heard of Mallakhamb at that time!

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Grrrip...and yes that is spelled correctly. I prefer the spray but they have a lotion for sweaty hands too. The spray helps with mild sweating and adds just a touch of grip but you can still spin without sticking too much.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I love Pole Physics!  Plus I exfoliate daily!

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love Mika Yoga Wear and AMB shorts.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Mostly in bare feet as I teach in bare feet so that is what I'm use to. However if I'm dressed up and out dancing I prefer 6-inch heels.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I was a registered nurse in ER/Trauma

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

Brainstorming with my husband...though I never really cared for how long it is!

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

Beautiful spins can take my breath away.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Simple Man by Deftones.

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

The Great Midwest Pole Dance Competition and Convention 2012 due to be held in August. More information will be available soon at www.MidwestPoleDancing.com.

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

We offer online teacher training and live instructor certification courses sanctioned by the Pole Fitness Association and The Pole Dance Community as well as approved for CEUs by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. Check www.PoleDancerCertification.com for more information.

Studio Spotlight: Poletential!

I first heard about Poletential when I started going to Twirly Girls almost two years ago.  Since both studios are in the Bay Area, it was assumed that they are fierce competitors.  However, they are almost an hour apart, so there really is no reason to feel this way.  I started seeing awesome photos with pretty backgrounds on Facebook from their studio.  I heard about the lovely Amber Richard (who also teaches at BeSpun in Hollywood when she's going to school), who is another tall pole dancer.  Poletential seemed like a cool pole studio, just like my Twirly Girls!

Earlier this year, I attended the Air Show at a club in Redwood City.  I later saw on Facebook that one of their girls was battling breast cancer.  I joined the Team Pink Tracey Facebook group and learned that they are having a fundraiser to support Tracey.  Like any other studio, they are a family and they are supportive of their family.  I love hearing good things about other studios!

Rita and I are planning to attend the Zumba Fundraiser this month and are excited to try the silks hammock class next month at Poletential.

Anyway, here are co-owners Christina and Pam from Poletential, who are joining our pole circle!

What is your fitness background?

Christina: I was a fast-pitch softball pitcher when I was younger, I worked 80 hour weeks during most of the 80's and 90's so there was very little fitness. I finally found Pilates after retiring from High Tech in 1999 and was hooked. I also love trying new things like cycling, surfing, kayaking...etc.

Pam:  I was a gymnast for 10 years and after several injuries I hung up my leotard.  I didn't do much in my 20's other than sleep and watch TV and it wasn't until I was in my 30's when a co-worker dragged me to a Pilates class that I started a regular fitness routine.  Now that I'm in my 40's I'll try anything that involves adrenaline, specifically climbing things!

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

Christina: I incorporate Pilates into all the classes that I teach so that I make sure to get it in for myself. Most of my routine includes teaching, teaching and teaching.

Pam:  It's not what I wish it was.  I work a 40 hour a week job that requires me to travel 50% of the time and I have 2 young children.  All my fitness is on a pole or a piece of fabric.

What kind of diet do you follow?

Christina: I just lost a ton of weight following a very low calorie, lean protein and pretty much no carb diet. I'm still trying to follow it, but with a bit more cheating.

Pam:  No specific diet.  I would be happy eating only bread and cheese every single day.

Do you have a dance background?

Christina: Ha, ha, ha. No. I'm a dancer wanna-be.

Pam:  Ditto to what Christina said.  Just the question makes me giggle.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

Christina: Not until they have an over 45 and tires easily division.

Pam:  No competing for me but I really enjoy attending the different competitions.

What interested you about pole dancing?

Christina: I love the combination of expression and strength. It is the only time my brain turns off and I'm in the moment.

Pam:  I started pole dancing a few months after having my son and it made me feel confident again and whipped my bootie back into shape.  I was instantly hooked.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

Christina: It all depends on the conversation. We do both.

Pam:  I consider them both forms of fitness whether I'm in bare feet with all the lights on or wearing 6" stiletto's with the lights off.  I love them both.

What do you think about the stripper vs. fitness debate?

Christina: Not sure. I guess I don't really understand the "debate"

Pam:  Can you bust into a Superman? Not sure what the "debate" is about?

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Christina: Sheer will.

Pam:  I don't use any type of grip aide.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Christina: Both!

Pam:  Both, and add quad skates to the mix for me!

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

Christina: Feeling sorry for myself because I had retired from High Tech and didn't know what to do next.

Pam:  I am an event planner which is still my full time job.  Poletential is my passion and my sanctuary.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

Christina: It popped into my head as a "code name". Typical of High Tech where we put a code name on a project. I told Pam, here is what we can use until we have a name. It stuck. She came up with the "Fitness with a Twirl" part of it!

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

Christina: The feeling of letting go.

Pam:  It's all about me!

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Christina: It is always based on my next "performance" and that is a secret.

Pam:  Johnny Cash's "Hurt" was, is and always will be my favorite.

Tell us about Team Pink Tracey and the upcoming Zumba FUNdraiser.

Tracey is part of the Poletential Family. We watched her really grow as a pole dancer, Mom and woman. Her diagnosis really rallied the entire client base to pull together and help her. It really could have happened to any one of us. Team Pink Tracey is our FaceBook group that has members from all walks of life who help with support, money, rides and so much more! Our instructor, AnnaLiza, has mobilized all of her Zumba gals to gather for an amazing FUNdraiser for Tracey on October 14th at Poletential. Ok...tears...go to the website for more info.

[The FUNdraiser is Friday, October 14, please check the link above for more information!]

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

Our second "AirShow: Performance with a Twirl" is on December 3rd. Our first one in July was a huge hit! We have amazing performers along with our own students both on the pole and aerial. We will have a ton of great guest instructor workshops that weekend too.

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

Everyone is welcome at Poletential!

Your Own Worst Enemy

Posted on 6th Oct 2011 @ 9:38 PM

Last year I wrote a blog for The Pole Dancing Shop called Powerful Bodies, Even More Powerful Minds.
I explained my situation -- that at 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds, I wasn't the "normal" pole dancer. I promised to get into shape. At the end of the post, I asked what was holding you back.

I already know what is holding me back. My own worst enemy is...ME.

It is a year and a half later. I still have 40 pounds to lose and have really spent the last year losing strength and feeling worse about myself. I keep seeing amazing dancers perform and I tell myself, "this is IT, I am back on the horse -- eating right and exercising!" Then I see a cookie or a bag of jellybeans and I'm right back where I started. That depresses me, so I don't exercise as hard as I should. And that's how the downward spiral begins.

Two weeks ago, I traveled to Los Angeles for the California Pole Dance Championships. I also took classes at BeSpun and OC Pole Fitness. I had an amazing time and met a lot of really awesome people, and I really came away with a whole new respect for the sport and a desire to be better. When I came home, I had a private lesson with Shelly Lamb. It made me want to be stronger.

Lori Myers Pole DancingI really have been getting in my own way for the last year. I spent my first year pole dancing by gaining strength and learning how to move. I have spent the second year letting myself get out of shape, making excuses and not working hard -- at anything, except maybe eating. I have had a lot of stress in my life in the last year and I have allowed that excuse to give me permission to eat or not exercise or not work on my pole moves. So today I take that power back. I took my home pole down in January of 2011 due to some construction. I need to get that back up. I used to go to class at Twirly Girls twice a week and I've only been going once. I need to start going more often.

I did just start pilates reformer classes, which I need to help me with my core strength, but I also need to get back into the gym for spin (cycle) and to run on the treadmill (another excuse: my gym went out of business with no notice awhile back, and I haven't joined another "real" gym yet). I have no desire to compete but I am having fun visiting other studios and I don't want to feel like a failure on the pole when I don't have the strength to do basic moves -- especially when I'm trying to show off in front of other people.

So today I really do make a commitment to myself and to pole dancing. I will continue with pilates reformer twice a week. I need to add in spin twice a week and running once a week for cardio. I need to get into the studio for pole at least twice a week. And, for good measure, I need to add one yoga class a week into the mix.

How about you? Are you holding yourself back? If you are, I hope you will commit with me today to be a happier, healthier, more fit pole person. Leave a comment [on the PDS' website] and share this article with other Polers out there, then add me on Facebook and we can be accountability buddies!

Studio Spotlight: Studio Jasmine!

Here is another Twitter friend to add to our ever-widening pole dancing circle (I can actually see little poles with dancers on them across a map of the world...maybe someone can create a logo!!):  This is Jasmine Grace!

What is your fitness background?

I figure skated about 3-4 times a week growing up. I was on a synchronized ice-skating team for 6 years and we disbanded when everyone went off to college. After I quit skating I didn’t follow any fitness routine at all and slowly gained 40 lbs over 4 years time. Then I found pole dancing! It has transformed my body and it is helping me to get into the best shape of my life.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I try to pole dance 2-3 times a week. I am working yoga and pilates into my fitness routine about twice a week as well. I do a short yoga session before bed when I have the time. It really helps relax my back muscles for a better nights sleep.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I’m really bad about what I eat. I don’t eat very healthy at all to be honest so I rely mostly on portion control. I eat a few small meals throughout the day when I am hungry.

Do you have a dance background?

I have no dance background. I have never taken a dance class in my life but like I said before I figure skated for quite some time so it did have its benefits.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I have never entered a pole competition before. I just started out about a year and half ago and I have tremendous stage fright. When I was younger, I never once skated solo in a competition. I always competed with my team, which consisted of about 15-20 girls. I am still working up the courage to dance in a pole competition. Maybe next year at the pole convention?

What interested you about pole dancing?

At first, I just wanted to learn to dance around the pole and do a few spins for my husband. When I went to youtube to find some moves to learn I found a whole community of people using it as an apparatus to do gravity defying stunts that looked literally impossible to execute. I kept thinking to myself, how are they doing that? And with such grace? I was hooked from that day on! I have been teaching myself from youtube ever since!

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I don’t really have a preference, but I do find myself using the term pole dancing more often. I think it describes my style more. I don’t just do it for the fitness aspect. I like creating a lyrical dance.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

Dancing is dancing and talent is talent! It really all depends on the approach and the demeanor of the dancer.  I think pole dancing has roots everywhere. It is hard to pin point it and say that it came from one specific place. Every country approaches pole dancing differently, some countries very differently, and other countries only slightly. I think we should remain more focused on where pole dancing is headed versus where it has been!

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

I have not experimented with any product yet. It is on my to do list. I’m really interested in trying itac2.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I don’t get dry skin that much. I just use a little bit of lotion on my off pole days. I never use lotion on the days when I am on the pole.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love Bad Kitty Exoticwear, especially their Pole Fit collection! I’m about to buy an outfit from PoleSkivvies to support a fellow poler. From what I have heard, I won’t be disappointed!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I prefer to dance barefoot. I think it is very sexy when pole dancers wear heels in their performances, but for everyday practicing it’s just not for me.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I recently just graduated in 2010 with a BFA in graphic design. I had a hard time finding a job after school, so I decided to spend some time designing an online pole studio for self-taught pole dancers, like myself.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

The name of my studio is Online Pole Studio, and it is simply that because I feel like my website is a giant online pole studio for everyone across the globe to instruct and share knowledge about pole dancing for no cost.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

I love the thrill! I never thought I would ever be hanging from the pole by just the skin of my leg. I always wanted to take gymnastics and dance classes growing up but the figure skating classes already broke the budget. It is hard to believe that buying my first pole would lead me to learning both.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

“You and I” by Lady Gaga

What else would you like people to know about you or your studio?

Online Pole Studio is a great instructional aid for self-taught pole dancers. It has a pole moves glossary divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced moves. There is also a photo gallery, videos section, FAQ section, members section, and a forum coming soon!

You can sign up for a membership at Online Pole Studio for free at this web address: http://www.onlinepolestudio.com
Upon signing up you can create a profile, add friends, upload photos, connect your YouTube channel, and socialize with other pole dancers!

My youtube channel is: http://www.youtube.com/user/onlinepolestudio

My Twitter name is @studiojasmine I follow back all dancers!

Studio Spotlight: Embody Pole Fitness!

Our pole circle widens as we welcome another Twitter friend, Diana, and her studio, Embody Pole Fitness to the fold!

What is your fitness background?

I have been an athlete since my early 20’s, when I began long distance trail running. I am also an avid hiker. I’ve hiked Mt. Whitney twice and Mt. Langley. I began weight lifting 6 years ago and am currently training to compete in the Iron Man Fitness Competition in January. I found pole dancing, through a friend 3 years ago and became instantly smitten. It is by far the most challenging  and exhilarating workout I have ever participated in.

What is your fitness routine (on and off the pole)?

I train on the pole 2-3 days a week, about 2 hours at a time. I also teach 8 pole classes a week at Embody Pole Fitness. I attend all the workshops I possibly can to learn and improve my technique and skills. I run 45 minutes, 4-5 days a week and lift weights twice a week. I also teach Kettlebell and ChickFit Fitness bootcamps at Embody, and since I’m one of those instructors that participate, I get an amazing workout with the students.

What kind of diet do you follow?

I am very strict with my diet, more so now that I am training for the fitness competition. I believe that diet is 80% of how you look and feel. I eat 7 small meals a day, 2 of which are shakes, small portions, lots of vegetables, protein and very low carbs. I do allow myself one cheat meal a week, where I completely overindulge and become a huge glutton.

Do you have a dance background?

Actually, no I don’t, the dance part of pole has been the most challenging for me and also what I love and admire the most. Fortunately, I have the most amazing instructor and studio manager, Jackie Arriaga, who has a dance degree from Oregon State. She has traveled the world teaching and performing  lyrical, ballet, and jazz. She is generous with her knowledge and time, she has taught me so much, changing the way I move and the way I look at my body. I train very hard to improve my dance. I’ll be attending jazz dance classes in January and look forward to incorporating this knowledge into my pole dancing.

Do you compete (pole fitness or any other kind of fitness competitions)?

I have not had the courage to submit for a pole competition YET, but am feeling the bug. I’ll definitely be submitting this year. I will be competing in the Iron Man Fitness competition this year and look forward to the challenge.

What interested you about pole dancing?

The beauty of the movement. The first time a saw a girl on the pole, I was speechless with admiration, she took my breath away, she seemed to float and glide around the pole.  I wanted to move with that grace, confidence and fluidity. Once I began the journey there was no turning back, Pole really is addicting. Never, in my life, with the exception of motherhood, has any one thing changed me, as a person, as this journey of Pole Dancing has. I capitalize it because, to me, it is a living, breathing entity. Somewhere I go, when I’m sad, when I’m happy, when I think I can, and when I think I can’t.

Do you have a preference? "pole fitness" or "pole dancing"

I think people us the term Pole Fitness thinking it has less stigma attached to it, thereby is less threatening to your average woman. But realistically, it is dancing, a beautiful, creative, life altering form of dance. I think we should keep it that way. It makes me sad to think that the beauty of dance in pole would be diminished.

What do you think about the stripper vs. pole fitness debate?

I’ve never been involved in exotic dance, although I’ve been to dozens of strip clubs, I’m always taken by the sensual flow of movement exotic dancers have. In many ways I attempt to emulate their movements and incorporate them into my dance. Seriously, this whole pole movement started in the strip clubs and to say otherwise is false. I think it’s ridiculous and a huge waste of energy to dwell on it. There is beauty in all forms of dance.

What is your favorite product to help you stick to the pole?

Love, love, love Dry Hands and Dewpoint. I use Dewpoint on my body and Dry Hands on my hands. With this combination I’m transformed into Spiderwoman.

How do you deal with the dry skin on pole days (and on off-pole days)?

I grease up with tons of lotion at night, I also use a mixture of jojoba oil and grapeseed oil. I love aquaphore for my knees, elbows and the back of my knees. It helps so much with the chafing from all the leg hooks. I shower before classes, to remove any trace of oils and I Dewpoint up before I get on the pole.

Where do you like to buy your pole clothes?

I love the clothes we develop and sell at Embody Pole Fitness, we’ve come out with our line of clothes, to be launched in December. I also love Mika Yoga and Bad Kitty, awesome quality and a great fit.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I love to dance barefoot the best, but force myself to wear heels. They make your legs look amazing and also protect your feet. I think it makes me a stronger pole dancer to dance in shoes, forcing me to compensate for the added weight, as well as forcing me to improve my balance.

What did you do before opening your pole studio?

I own an IT consulting business, where I do IT security, ethical hacking and network administration. I have been doing IT for 15 years. I wish, and hope in the near future to focus completely on my studio and dancing. Teaching is the most rewarding career I have ever had. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity.

How did you come up with the name for your studio?

To Embody something is to become part of, I believe once you begin the journey of pole dancing it becomes part of you and changes you as a person. To embody pole is to become part of an amazing movement.

What is your favorite thing about dancing on the pole?

When I conquer a trick, combo or movement, that feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment, can make my week.  When I emotionally fall into a dance, really letting myself go, on move leading to the next, nothing compares.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Empty Sky by Simon Wilcox. My favorite songs are the ones I can attach an emotion to, a moment in my life where the emotions were overwhelming.

Do you have any other upcoming events you'd like people to know about?

Iron Man Fitness Competition on January 27 at the LA Convention Center, come out and be our cheering section. As a Pole Dance instructor I am struck by the life altering changes that pole dancing brings out in women. I see it every day, over the weeks and months, the metamorphosis that occurs throughout their journey. Pole Dancing…a journey, can anyone who has not taken this journey really understand what this means? Explaining it to someone who has not begun the steps is like explaining a color to a blind person. The explanations are all images, feeling and they are different for everyone. It is red, hot, vibrant, liberating, humbling, inspiring, frustrating, joyous…but the first steps, those are the big ones. The first steps are the scary steps, where you put yourself out there, making yourself vulnerable to a room full of women you don’t know very well, if at all. Perhaps you see yourself, in what you believe to be a not so flattering light, thinking they see you this way as well, but really, unbeknownst to you, all of those women are cheering for you, wanting so badly for you to take the next step, knowing if you do, the treasure, in yourself, you will find. I watch, stunned and amazed, as I see women change and grow, strong successful women who would, when facing the pole become timid and fearful when the words “free dance” were uttered, flourish and become before my very eyes, self-actualized, assured, appreciating their bodies and their curves. In their powerful movements I see a deeper understanding of themselves. In their dance they have allowed themselves to become playful, graceful, mesmerizing, unique, and exhilarating.

The Vulnerability and Power of Pole Dancing

Perhaps you see yourself, in what you believe to be a not so flattering light, thinking they see you this way as well, but really, unbeknownst to you, all of those women are cheering for you, wanting so badly for you to take the next step, knowing if you do, the treasure, in yourself, you will find. Allowing yourself to muddle through these awkward first steps is the greatest gift you will give yourself. Never, in my life, with the exception of motherhood, has any one thing changed me, as a person, as this journey of Pole Dancing has. I capitalize it because, to me, it is a living, breathing entity. The Gift of Pole Dancing

Pole dancing has recently been described, the world over, as the "latest fitness craze", although this is true, it is so much more. Indeed, pole dancing will tone your thighs, give you sexy defined arms and shoulders, and melt away muffin tops. That's not all it will give you, you will gain a precious gift, the gift of self-acceptance, confidence and love, for yourself. Dance, sensual music and movement changes the color of your world, gives you new, rosy glasses to view yourself through. As I think about the life changing gifts this sensual, astonishing dance has brought to women around the world, I wonder where it all began….

Pole dancing has been undeniably embedded into the cultural mindset as the foremost sensuous art, but the history of the practice today is somewhat of a mystery. Some point to the early European fertility rituals involving dancing around a large pole placed in the center of town called a Maypole for the day the ritual was celebrated, May 1st. Others point to African tribal rituals in which betrothed women would dance provocatively around a wooden phallus. The dance was designed to show their future husbands how they wanted to be made love to.

Some trace the traditions roots back to ancient China, where acrobats would perform death-defying stunts and hold mind-bending poses on metal poles. In an interesting parallel the Indian art of Mallakhamb involved an artful dance and acrobatics routine centered around a wooden pole. Though these routines weren't regularly erotic in nature, and most often performed by men, the influence of these skills orientated moves still eco in the modern pole dance.

In contemporary times pole dancing is often linked to the emergence of the so called "HoochiCoochi" dancers who performed with the travel circuses, performing their routines on the pole supporting the big top. These primitive routines quickly evolved though, and were soon the main feature at Go-Go bars and table dancing clubs from the 60's through the 80's. In a very short time frank eroticism just wouldn't cut it, as pole routines became more and more acrobatic and heavily focused on the skill of the dancer.

Today's pole dancing is a thing unto itself. Mixing the subtle arts of sensuality and the art of high-performance acrobatics, pole dancing has become one of the most challenging and rewarding ways attain the stunning body you've always dreamed of, while having more fun than lifting dumbbell could ever hope to be.

Dance Your Way to Sanity

Dancing has been with us since the dawn of civilization. It's something that comes to us naturally, an urge coming from the natural rhythms within our bodies. Dancing is good for you, and in ways that we are still learning about today. When you dance the larger problems of moving through life dissipate and all that is left is the movement of the dance. Dancing gets you fit; it burns calories, tightens muscle, and heightens the metabolism. It releases hormones that help the skin and give a lasting sense of wellbeing, and instills a palpable sense of confidence.

More than that, scientists have now found links between dancing and staving off Alzheimer's. Dancing develops procedural learning and concentration because dancing is a dynamic rather than repetitive physical activity and can link past memories to the present. Various aspects of a dance session, such as the music, exercise, and social components of dancing can improve autobiographical memory and reduce agitation, anxiety, delusions, and other behavioral symptoms in dementia of any severity, and more importantly are really fun. Dance awakens memories outside the dance session and helps patients find themselves again. A multisensory approach with different sounds, colors, and tangible objects further stimulates engagement and stimulation of participants.

Dance is something that takes us out of our own world and transports us to another, one of feeling and of rhythm. It keeps us young not only by what it does to our bodies, but by what it does to our hearts. In dancing you are ageless, the beat that you follow both keeping time and driving it away. Dancing is an art of body and soul, it speaks to us about who we are at our deeper levels and lets us be who it is we want to be. By dancing often what you develop is a youth that will follow you through your life.
