Poletry in Motion: Phoenix Aerial Art & Pole

Recently, I attended a showcase at Phoenix Aerial Art & Pole in Berkeley.  Phoenix recently changed ownership, and I was eager to come out support Kirstin in her new endeavor.  I can't believe this was my first visit!

The studio is beautiful, but what I loved most about the showcase is that this is a family, just like Twirly Girls!  A studio recently opened down the street from my office (Hello Spin Sity!!).  My co-worker asked why I wouldn't be attending regular classes.  He asked if it was about competition.  I said, no, not really.  The studios in the Bay Area are pretty good about supporting each other, are far enough apart to not really have to compete, and I adore the ladies at Spin Sity, however, Twirly Girls is my family.  While I certainly hope to attend some open pole or occasional classes at Spin, I certainly look forward to going home to Twirly Girls for my regular classes each week.  That isn't because the ladies (and potential gents) at Spin Sity aren't awesome -- it just means I love my family.  Phoenix is my extended family and I was extremely happy to support their show and see that they are just like us -- they love and support each other and provide a safe place for these dancers to express themselves and feel beautiful.

I uploaded a bunch of videos to my personal Facebook page but wanted to share these three with you.  The sex appeal is through the roof.  It makes me want to work harder to feel comfortable in my own skin so that I can move with the fluidity that can only come with confidence like this.  These ladies are sexy AF.  Sexy has never been my thing.  I feel silly and I usually laugh, make jokes and ruin the moment.  I bow down and hope to learn something from each of them.  Please enjoy and if you have any messages of support for Kirstin and Phoenix, share them below!

December 2013 Blog Hop: Best of 2013...

I have been avoiding this blog hop, mostly because I didn't know if I had a bunch of things I loved about 2013.  Did I love my foot being injured and having surgery and losing strength and gaining weight and feeling crappy?  Not really.  But when I look back, I really didn't have a terrible year.  So, I thought I would go through my posts for the year and pick some of my favorites to re-share with those of you who may be new or may have missed them.   While I will discuss some posts at length, others I will just list so you can decide if you want to read them or not.

Random stuff about me:

I posted in January about sweating and magnesium.  Sweating is still an issue for me.  I sweat from my head, which can be gross when flipping around wet hair, and I can't run my hands through my hair otherwise I will slip on the pole.  It's not super sexy.  My hands and body, however, are generally overly dry.  I have Dew Point for my legs and Mighty Grip for my hands.  Just to make life interesting, if I flip over in some way, into a handstand or inversion, my body suddenly gets nervous, and then my legs will sweat.  It's super awesome to be a pole dancer with these weird problems.  I have been taking magnesium this year and I feel like some days it helps and some days it doesn't.  I have contemplated taking medication to help with hyperhydrosis, but am worried that it would cause more issues in my body NOT to sweat (we sweat for a reason!).  If you have any tips on this issue, I would very, very much appreciate it.

Blog Hops:

My very first pole post for 2013 was a PDBA Blog Hop!  It was listing pole goals.  Did I hit my goals?  Yes and no.  I was on track until my foot derailed me.  Not only could I not take a class each week, I couldn't even teach my own class for a couple of months this year.  It has been a very frustrating year in the physicality department and I am very much looking forward to setting (and attaining) the same pole goals in 2014 that I set for 2013:  Take a weekly class, work on flow and get stronger.  I have not yet made it back to taking a weekly class on top of teaching my weekly class, but that is on the list for January.  I also feel like taking workshops with Tracee Kafer helped reignite my desire to dance again.  And I have been a beast at yoga so I am already feeling muscles in my arms and legs again.  I got this.  I know it.   (I later updated old pole goals with photos but haven't progressed in any.)

The February Blog Hop discussed our love of pole.

The March Blog Hop was about pole products.

The April Blog Hop was about PPC.

The July Blog Hop is about a day in the life of a pole dancer.

The August Blog Hop is all about social media.

Perfect timing for the September Blog Hop.  We talked about wellness.

October Blog Hop...I had to do two!  First up:  stripping the stripper out of pole.  Second up:  the sanitization of pole.

November Blog Hop:  Gratitude.

I posted about Derby Skinz shorts in January as well.  Still my favorites because they are fully customizable!  I think I have three different pair now and I love them all for different reasons.

So, did I REALLY just list every pole post I made in 2013?  Shockingly, no.  But I did list most of them.  You know why?  Because every single thing I do in the pole world makes me happy.  These are a lot of the awesome things that happened to me in 2013, and this post serves as a reminder to myself that I am blessed.

I feel very fortunate to surround myself with a lot of amazing people.  I am so happy to be part of the Pole Dancing Bloggers Association.  Valentina, Sheena and Nina (ummm, do all of your names rhyme and I JUST figured that out?!) are awesome at pushing me into being more aware of myself and my writing and I am so happy to have been invited to be on the Board.  I didn't list any of my posts here, but I am grateful to be a writer for Vertical Art and Fitness Magazine, and although I haven't been asked to do a post in awhile, I appreciate that The Pole Dancing Shop gave me writing projects for a very long time.  Non-pole related appreciations include joining the Chunky Girl Comics family this year and having a job to pay for all of my adventures.

Thank you to everyone who was part of my 2013 and I look forward to what 2014 has in store for me!  Please share your highlights for this past year in the comments section below.

Poletry in Motion: Kitty Kats' Korner

So here is a random chain of events over the last few years that lead up to a champagne and cupcake party at a studio in Vacaville less than two weeks ago.

A few years back, I randomly started talking to Jade on Studio Veena's website.  That lead to her coming to Twirly Girls and now she teaches there.  She also goes to a studio closer to her home called Kitty Kats' Korner.

Last year, around this time, I took Nadia and Mina to Sacramento for a workshop and met a lady named Jeanette.  She had been looking for a studio closer to her home and I mentioned Kitty Kats' Korner.  Maybe five or six months ago, a girl named Stephanie joined my Pole Dancers Unite group on Facebook.  I realize she's local and mention the Jade-Kitty Kat connection...and Stephanie already goes there!

One thing I really enjoy doing is taking photos of cupcakes and putting them on Facebook.  Everyone notices that I over-post cupcake photos.  One day, Stephanie says, hey we should have cupcake night, so fast forward to a Friday night just over a week ago and I came to Kitty Kats' Korner to have cupcakes and pole jam with some lovely ladies!

Kitty Kats' Korner is located in Vacaville.  It is inside the Naughty or Nice Boutique, which has the most adorable guard dogs, Bailey and Jedda.  The back room has been transformed into a very safe and sexy work space.  The warm-up was very sensual and fun.  There was (I believe) one brass pole and three Lil Mynxes.  Actually, I believe there were five poles, though, so now I need to go back and look over the photos.  But I digress.  I had never used a Lil Mynx and I really loved it.  They are powder-coated so you get a little bit more "stick" but you can still spin on them.

After the warm up, and breaking up into groups with one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced student, we worked on some moves.  Then we started mingling more and just had a lot of fun.  The cameras broke out and all the crazy photos started.

At one point, Sandra, the owner, had everyone sit while a couple of different groups performed.  The vibe at Kitty Kats' is very sexy and sensual.  One of the groups did a very tactile number where they basically incorporated everything they touched into whatever they were doing.  They were in a circle around the outside of the room and they slowly moved around the room touching everything -- the walls, the floor, the feather boas hanging on the walls, the poles...  I was sitting so that I had a view of people coming around a corner.  The song was long -- but I was never bored and I anticipated every single person coming around that corner because I wanted to know how each person would incorporate that corner into their dance.  It was really awesome to watch.

I really want to thank Sandra for allowing an outsider, Jade, Jeanette, Stephanie, and all of the girls for having me out for such a fun evening!

Poletry in Motion: Aeriform Arts

While I was in LA for Comikaze last week, I stopped by to meet Facebook pole sister, Lea, and go to an aerial yoga class at Aeriform Arts.

First off, I NEEDED that hammocks class.  My back has been "out" for awhile.  I had an adjustment by Keith before I left, but sitting in the car all morning on Friday, then standing in heels at Comikaze Friday night just didn't do my body any favors.

I drove right up to the studio and there was FREE street parking.  Bonus in Los Angeles!  The studio had brass poles and hammocks were already set up for class (after aerial yoga on Saturday is their hammocks class, which is like dancing in the air...check out their videos on YouTube).

The price was great!  Only $20 for a class (discounted to $18 for a first-time student).

Roseanne was the instructor and she was fantastic.  I felt like the hammocks were used to assist me into moves instead of making the moves so difficult I couldn't do them.  I even flipped over (with help from Lea and Roseanne) and hung upside down quite a few times.

I really, really enjoyed meeting both ladies and was excited to meet another Facebook poler in person.  I want to thank Lea for having me out to Aeriform Arts.  Next time I'm in LA, I definitely want to take another class!

Please enjoy some photos from the studio and if you're in the area, give Aeriform Arts a try!

A Poletastic Nadia Sharif Weekend

Last weekend was one of those unexpected, fun adventure weekends.  I knew Nadia Sharif would be in town but couldn't sign up for any workshops.  Wonky foot is having a bad life right about now (surgery in two weeks!!).  I did, however, hope to at least see her since she is the biggest lover of my boobies (it's good she doesn't mind them...they are face height for her).

On Saturday, my good friend Kate from Pole Etak had hooked up some of us Twirly Girls with the opportunity to have bit parts on a reality TV show.  If you've ever filmed a reality TV show, it isn't all that real.  But we got to sit around for the afternoon and chat and have fun with our friends while we were waiting for our turn.  The show is called Let It Ride, which will be on the National Geographic channel.  You can read an article about it HERE.

That evening, Kate, Rita and I met up with awesome pole ninja, Nadia Sharif to have dinner.  On our way, we stopped for a photo adventure on Grizzly Peak.  It is really beautiful up in the hills between Moraga and Berkeley.  And it often feels like I am rushing from one thing to the next without really enjoying what I'm doing.  So it was nice to take a few minutes to be silly and take in the beautiful views.

On Sunday, Nadia had a workshop at Sedusa in Campbell, California, which is about an hour away.  She asked if I could drive her and I am always down for an adventure with Nadia!  I asked if Kate could join us.  She did and we had a great time.  The studio was really beautiful.  There were ten poles in the main room -- three up on a stage.  There was also an 11th pole inside a cage on the side of the room, which I claimed as my home.  It was awesome.  I loved the cage.

My foot really limits me physically right now but I did do the warm-ups for each workshop.  Oh man was I sore on Monday!  I made me realize how much strength and flexibility I've lost since my foot really started hurting in April and I started limiting my exercise.  I have made a new commitment to at least get some yoga in four or five times a week (which I did last night at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco -- Yoga on the Labyrinth -- check it out!).

After the workshops, we stopped for dinner before delivering Nadia to the airport.  Kate was participating in a yogangster yoga pose photo challenge.  So, in front of the strip mall restaurant, we stopped to take photos of Kate attempting a crow pose variation with her leg extended behind her (I couldn't even dream of doing it).  A drunk dude from some nowhere bar (no really, I think it was called Nowhere Bar & Grill) came out and was staring and talking shit. So we left and Kate didn't get her official yogangster pose.  He felt like Nadia and I weren't being supportive enough of Kate.  bahahahahaahahahahahaha!  He drunkenly stumbled to his motorcycle where his wife informed him that he'd ruined our day.  HA!

We left San Jose and sadly dropped Nadia off at the airport.  Kate and I continued our adventure into San Francisco where I dropped her off at her apartment in the Tenderloin district.  The Tenderloin in San Francisco is such an interesting place.  Mostly little white girls like Kate should not be hanging out in that area.  The night before, there had been two shootings within blocks of Kate's apartment.  We tried to find the body chalk outline but apparently the police don't use those anymore.  I dropped Kate off and started my own adventure across the Bay Bridge to get home (WTF is up with that much traffic on a Sunday?!).

Thanks again to all my poletastic friends for a lovely weekend!!  I can't wait for the next one!

Open House: Entangle & Sway

On Friday, I went on an after-work adventure in San Francisco.  I stuck around the City to check out Entangle & Sway's open house.  I have long been Facebook friends with E&S owner, Nikki Brady, but we had yet to meet in person.  I always meant to make it to previous open houses, but have always been wary of coming into the City on a Friday night.  Well, now that I work here and have had some public transportation experience, I felt like the time was right.

Located in an adorable neighborhood near the Presidio in San Francisco, I almost wasn't expecting to open the door into a dance studio.  They are a female-only studio with an emphasis on learning sexy moves and building self-esteem.  They only have two mirrors for those learning advanced tricks, and they turn on red lights when they dance.  It really allows students to get out of their heads and into their moves.

There was a showcase, which included both students and instructors.  I really enjoyed each and every performance.  I am missing pole since my foot has been injured.  I have also stepped away from "sexy" moves in the last year or so.  I felt very inspired to get back into it.

I was talking to a fellow local poler (well, newly local...Amy only moved here from Boston recently) about the pole community in the San Francisco Bay Area.  There really aren't a ton of studios for such a large area and we aren't anything like Los Angeles or New York when it comes to being pole-crazy.  I really am excited to support local pole studios so that we can have a happy, healthy community that promotes growth.

Thank you to Nikki and her girls for sharing their pole love with me last week!  I hope to make it out for some future workshops after my wonky foot has healed!  If you are in the San Francisco area and are looking for a studio, please check out Entangle & Sway!

Poletry in Motion: Showcase at Studio Botan

I have, of course, known about Studio Botan in San Francisco since it basically opened.  I first tweeted Sahaya, their creative director, way back in 2010 when I went to California Pole Dance Championship.  I also watched her perform at PPC last year in Los Angeles.  And, now that I'm working in San Francisco, it turns out the studio is just blocks from my office.  I have been meaning to come out to the city to see the studio, but the timing just never worked out.  However, last weekend, they had their spring showcase, including a guest performance by one of my favorite people, Natasha Wang, so I decided it was time to venture over and check it out!

What a beautiful studio.  The studio is spacious and inlcudes (I believe) six tall poles.  There is a huge window on one side (which was open for the showcase, but they normally cover during classes, for those who are shy).  Everyone was really sweet and their performances were amazing.  You can really tell a lot of work goes into the choreography of the routines.  With many performances competiting in the second annual Pacific Pole Championship (PPC) this weekend, we agreed not to publish many videos.  I did take some and may publish mine after the competition.  But Studio Botan took video of Natasha, and I thought I could at least share that.  I also got to meet Crystal Gibson in person for the first time.

I have a co-worker who lives in the City, and she says she wants to try pole dancing, so I told her when she's ready, I will take her to Botan, since we can walk there after work.

Check out some of the photos from the night, as well as their video of Natasha's performance.  Natasha was performing on an injured knee.  What a pro and a beautiful lady!!

Poletry in Motion: Poletential!

Poletential is really becoming my home away from home.  Even though I am technically from another studio, they have all embraced me and I feel very welcome there.  Nothing can replace my Twirly Girls...I love Bel and every single person at the studio.  But it has certainly been fun meeting up with friends at Poletential on occasion!

Here are some of my past Poletential adventures:

I can't believe its been a week since my last post on the Confessions blog.  I went to Los Angeles for BeSpun's Pole Show LA and was working like mad through the weekend (shout out to Christina from Poletential...she was there too!).  I went to Poletential for Jessica's Pole-In-Motion class on the Sunday before I left on the trip.  Each week the class learns a short routine based on different genres of dance.

That week was Showgirl Style.  I really loved it.  It was simple but really cute and for those of us (ahem, mostly just me) who couldn't do a trick or two, she had options.  I felt like she broke down the pieces into small enough bites so that dance-dummies, like me, could keep up.  I sweat.  Of course.  I had fun.  (TRACEY WAS THERE!)  I also met Samantha there (we met on Studio Veena and she recently moved to the area) and Uzette from Alice Radio (San Francisco radio station, KLLC 97.3 FM).

I was really excited to meet up with Uzette because she is going to be doing a short pole routine in a couple of weeks at a Sarah and Vinnie Secret Show!  (More info on that later!)

Anyway, I had a great time taking class with Jessica at Poletential.  It has really inspired me to start learning how to DANCE more (not the silly body wiggle that I usually do).   So thank you to Jessica and all of the Poletential girls for being awesome as usual!  I am hoping to actually come out again this Sunday for another hammocks class...gotta check that schedule.

Aerial Hammock/Yoga at Poletential

Poletential seems to be quickly becoming my home away from home.  Although they are an hour away, so I can't really get there regularly for classes, they have some fun events that I have been really excited to attend.  I didn't get a chance to write much about it, but I was touched that Tracey invited Rita and me to Twirloween -- Poletential's birthday party and student/instructor showcase.  There are some videos on my YouTube account if you are interested.

Of course my first direct contact with Poletential was the Air Show last July.  I had so much fun and am eagerly anticipating the second Air Show next month.

I also attended a Zumba FUNdraiser to benefit the beautiful Tracey Horne.  What a lovely bunch of women who came together to support their pole sister in a time of need.

Also, don't forget Christina and Pam answered my Studio Spotlight questions recently as well.

In early October I had tried aerial silks at Twirly Girls and saw that Poletential had aerial hammock.  It looked a little easier than silks.  Rita and I signed up immediately, but due to scheduling issues, didn't get in for a class until yesterday.  I saw an aerial hammock demonstration at OC Pole Fitness' open house in September.  I mean, those girls were advanced and did some amazing things in the hammock but I figured anything with the word "hammock" in it couldn't be that hard.

Rita and I arrived at Poletential yesterday, ready for whatever the afternoon held for us.  Jessica was our instructor.  I guess I knew we wouldn't be gently swinging in the breeze, but I still don't know what I actually expected.  I figured it would be yoga-based as I had also heard aerial hammock described as aerial yoga.  But I certainly didn't expect the workout that I got!

We started seated on the ground doing a gentle warm-up/stretch and then Jessica told us to reach up and grab the hammock to lift ourselves off the floor.  I giggled.  Surely she was joking.  She wasn't and she lifted herself like a cute little genie and floated above the ground with her legs still folded.  I attempted to pull myself up, then saved myself the embarrassment and just stood up.

Then the real fun began:  Warming up with one of our legs in the hammock.  I will pretend that part of why I struggled so much was because I chose a hammock a little too low to the ground.  So my leg in the hammock was angled downward a bit instead of straight out.  Yeah, we'll go with that.

Ten minutes into the warm-up, I was sweating my ass off.  I struggled through some of the poses, mostly due to my own inability to balance (weak core, yes, I know!).  I joked with Jessica that I had signed up for the gentle hammock class (not the boot camp my body thought I was putting it through).  She shot back that we were almost done with the warm-up...and I don't think she was kidding.  :-)

After some awesome yoga poses, both on the ground and in the air, and some inversions (which I was only able to do for a little bit because the silks dug into my bad hip a little too much), we snuggled into the hammocks like little bugs in a rug for Savasana -- the final resting pose in yoga.  It's the few minutes you get to lay still, recover and reflect after you've worked so hard.  I swear there was a small earthquake.  The hammock swayed gently and bumped into one of the girls behind me.  It was not scary or uncomfortable.  It was kind of weird -- almost re-assuring that another person was floating in space with me.

I really enjoyed the class and am really sore today.  I know I have a long way to go before I would be able to consider myself even slightly adept at aerial yoga.  But I am always down for a challenge and am hoping to get in there at least once a month.  I also want to thank Jessica for putting up with me.  I know I tend to be a bit silly when I'm uncomfortable.

Thank you to Poletential for always being so welcoming to the Twirly Girls.  Next up:  I am definitely looking forward to trying some Liquid Pole with Ellen soon!

Poletry in Motion: Embody Pole Fitness

On Sunday, before heading home, I drove out to Corona to take a class with Krisanna at Embody Pole Fitness.  Apparently it was dance-dance weekend, because this was also not a pole class -- but a classic burlesque class.  Again, I was in a room with poles so I will call it a Poletry in Motion!

You may remember I did a Studio Spotlight on Embody Pole Fitness and Diana recently.  Check it out here.

I feel very lucky...I got another adorable chair routine, and ridiculous ab workout for the second day in a row.  Krisanna's class flowed very well.  We warmed up and started with abs on the chair and I wanted to die by the end.  We then learned a routine, piece by piece.  We practiced and practiced.  Then she sat and watched.  Luckily, there were some students in there who were amazing so I had someone to follow.  It's that whole...I can follow the instructor and do what I'm told but I can't dance on my own kind of thing.  :-)

I guess my only complaint isn't anyone's fault but my own.  We were doing that routine with little fold up plastic chairs and my large-esque ass did not fit on it very well.   So there was one move where we slide around so that we are actually laying backwards on the chair.  My chair tried to dump me on the floor more than once.  I rode that bucking bronco 'til the end, though, and didn't fall off!

After banging out another set of abs that made me want to cry, we got rid of the chairs and learned a short burlesque routine.  I wish I could have videoed our class so I don't forget what we learned.  I love how Krisanna moves.  She's is flexible, has beautiful curves and she looks so sexy when she's just walking.  I am pretty sure I did not look like that.

By the end of class, I was drenched again, my abs were sore again, and I was very happy with my experience at Embody Pole Fitness.  I also found some goodies to buy in the front, which I am excited to try out Wednesday night at Twirly Girls.

I was also excited to meet Diana in person.  I really enjoyed chatting with her and hope to take one of her classes when I return to So. Cal. in January!  If you are in the Inland Empire area, please give Embody Pole Fitness a call!

Poletry in Motion: OC Pole Fitness - Huntington Beach!

I headed down to Long Beach to visit Wes and Larissa again last weekend and decided to take a class at OC Pole Fitness' Huntington Beach location.  I previously did a Poletry in Motion for the Aliso Viejo location of OC Pole.  I guess this isn't technically a Poletry in Motion since I didn't actually take a pole class.  Instead, I took a cardio cabaret chair class with Felicia.  However, there were poles in the room, so I'm still gonna call it Poletry in Motion!

First off, the current Huntington Beach location is kind of hidden in the downstairs of an un-manned gym.  When I arrived, there was not one person at the desk or working out.  However, the door was open and I could clearly see the OC Pole Fitness sign on the window, so I figured I was in the right place.  I waited a few minutes near the desk before I got brave and decided to go hunting for a room that may have poles.  I found a cool spiral staircase and decided to venture down them.  Once I got downstairs, I saw the OC Pole sign again, heard the music and realized another class was still in session.  So I got comfy and hung out until it was time for my class.

This Poletry in Motion will only be valid for a couple more months as I understand they have a new Huntington Beach location opening in January.  I am really hoping to make it to their grand opening party.  I imagine, however, that Felicia will remain an instructor, so then I guess that re-validates my review.  :-)

I liked the studio space with its red walls and ballet bars all around.  It was perfectly tucked away in that bigger gym with blacked out sliding glass doors so no one could peek in while you are dancing.

I guess only one thing really needs to be said about this class, I SWEAT LIKE A PIG!  I had braided my new red hair all purdy so it would be wavy and sexy, all ripe for whipping around during class.  It was drenched within 20 minutes, so I did most of class with it wrapped in a bun so I didn't whip sweat into my own eyes (or even worse, into someone else's!). I definitely burned some calories (and my butt muscles).

We learned three short pieces to a chair routine (each were four counts of eight), perfectly counted out for us by Felicia.  We practiced each piece, separated by some killer abs and other strengthening exercises in between.  At the end, we put the routine together.

As I have said many times, I am not the best dancer, but I do enjoy dancing.  I am also pretty good about counting (since I essentially "grew up" during the step aerobics craze), and I can follow an instructor decently (so long as they don't say, "now its your turn!" and leave me to writhe in the middle of the floor while they watch).  I do miss little parts here and there but can usually catch up by the end and at least look like I was in sync for most of the routine.  The great thing about cabaret or burlesque is that there are usually a few spots where a pose is held and it gives me a split second to get back in line with the group.

What I lack is some style...or personality or something.  I feel like I am just copying the moves and I wish I had a little more confidence and could just do my thang without worrying about whether I'm on the right move.  I feel like when I don't think about dancing, that's when everything comes together.  I, however, over-think EVERYTHING.

At the end of the day, though, I had a great time.  I loved the routine, I sweat my ass off, my abs and butt were sore and I had a lot of fun.  Felicia is adorable and I can't wait to go back and take it again (with Rita and Larissa this time)!

When zombie girls attack!  Oh, how I love my iPhone flash.

Poletry in Motion: OC Pole Fitness - Aliso Viejo!

Although Rita and I were staying in Long Beach, we drove down to Aliso Viejo (Orange County) to take a class with Collette at OC Pole Fitness before driving home on Monday.  I understand they have a Huntington Beach location, which would have been closer (and I think they are building a new one -- to be opened soon!), but we really wanted to see Collette.

As I said in the blog about OC Pole's Open House on Saturday, I really expected the people at the studio to resemble Real OC Housewives or whatever that reality TV show is -- blonde, plastic, mean, fake.  I didn't find that at all.  I guess I shouldn't believe everything I see on TV.  Collette is the anti-OC reality TV soccer mom.  Not that she wouldn't embrace them if they walked through their doors, but she has dark hair and there is nothing fake or plastic about her.  She is also so supportive of her girls.  It was really touching to see that other pole studios ARE families -- just like Twirly Girls!

OC Pole offers a GREAT program that is called A Pole New You.  It not only encourages the ladies to work out regularly but gives them the support that they need to succeed.  Check out this success story on YouTube.

Anyway, back to our experience at the studio.  Rita and I arrived pretty early (we are never sure how traffic is going to be), so we sat in the aerial silks room and stretched and chatted with the office manager, Shavonne.  When Collette arrived, we formally introduced ourselves (we had attended the open house, of course, but it had been packed and Collette was busy, so we didn't introduce ourselves then).  We chatted for a few minutes, then walked into the studio.  There are mirrors in the front and along one side of the studio.  There is a small stage with three poles, then another five poles on the main floor.  There are heavy curtains along the window, so no one can peek in.  There is also a big, overstuffed chair (probably for chair dance class!), which I used as a towel rest.  It's a very warm and welcoming studio.  Most of the rest of the ladies in class claimed to be in their 40's, but you couldn't tell -- they all looked young and beautiful.  They were all friendly.

Collette turned the lights down, turned some music on and we got to the warm-up.  Collette's warm-up was extremely sensual.  She closed her eyes, moved so very slowly and smiled and mouthed the words to the song as she warmed us up.  It is hard to describe the warm-up.  I would like to say that I was warming up but I was mostly watching Collette.  She was so beautiful to watch.  Every move was sexy and with a purpose.  I mean, even her ab circles were sexy!  We probably warmed up for two to three songs.

Once we got up to actually get on the pole, we had a full house, so Collette would demonstrate on someone's pole then would walk around as each of us practiced the move.  Again, Rita and I were probably way out of our league.  We weren't as advanced as most of the girls, but we still really enjoyed the class.  I did my first spinning/floating angel, where I climbed on the pole and brought my body through on one side.  It only lasted a quarter of a second, but it was something new for me!

Again, I loved that everyone watched each other and clapped and cheered when someone accomplished something new.  After we were done with pole, we went down to the floor for some killer ab sets.  I'm still sore!

We sat around after class and chatted with Collette a little more.  She and Bel have spoken in the past, so it was fun to meet someone in person on behalf of Bel and Twirly Girls.  As proper pole dance ambassadors, we brought Twirly Girls shirts to share, and they gave us one for Bel (I'll give it to her tonight so we'll have photos to share tomorrow).

I was so impressed with Collette -- as a mother and a business person.  She has two beautiful daughters (who attended the open house and looked adorable in their tutus) and her studios, plus she manages Felix Cane and is involved with the Pole Fitness Association.  I can't even imagine how crazy her life is, but I'm really glad we got to meet her.

OC Pole was a really nice studio and I would suggest a visit if you are in Southern California!

Poletry in Motion: BeSpun

Last weekend, Rita and I went down to Los Angeles for the California Pole Dance Championship.  Since I was going to be in town, I wanted to take classes from different studios.  So, we scheduled classes at BeSpun in Hollywood and OC Pole Fitness in Aliso Viejo.  While driving home, I told Rita I wanted to create a little "corner" of my blog for reviews of studios I try while I'm traveling.  Rita came up with "Poletry in Motion."  I LOVED it so here we go!!

------------------

I first heard about BeSpun when I found videos of the owner, Leigh Ann on YouTube.   I was still new to the pole dancing industry, so I didn't realize that a lot of the pros were coming out of BeSpun.  The current US Pole Dance Champion, Natasha Wang, is from BeSpun.  Amy Guion, a recent interviewee in this very blog, and competitor in last weekend's CPDC, manages BeSpun.  Alethea Austin, who performed at Poletential's Air Show a few months ago, teaches at BeSpun.  Amber Richard, from Poletential in Redwood City, is going to school in Southern California and also teaches at BeSpun.  Anjel Dust, who put on the CPDC, teaches there too.  I am sure I am leaving out many other important pole dancers, but those are the names currently listed on their website that I recognize.

Rita and I made reservations to take class with Amber Richard.  Our class was scheduled for 2 p.m.  The studio is located in a pretty interesting part of Hollywood.  We didn't have to park too far away but we definitely wouldn't have made the walk if it had been dark.  You walk into the back of the building -- through a chainlink fence and a large, heavy rolling door -- into an MMA gym.  It's a big building that smells of testosterone and sweat.  BeSpun is actually inside of the MMA gym, Legends.  Two girls were standing at the front desk.  I could see Alethea sitting behind a desk.  We chatted with the girls for a minute, then realized we were actually talking to THE Leigh Ann!  She was so sweet.  The receptionist checked us in and had us sign paperwork while we chatted with Leigh Ann.  Rita asked her about whether she was offering other aerial arts and Leigh Ann said that they wanted to focus on what they did well -- pole dancing.  They were shaping competition level athletes.  Fair enough.

Leigh Ann told us to go through the pink door and watch the end of the class before ours (which was being taught by Amy).  Amber happened to walk by and we quickly said hello and then Rita and I walked to the pole room.  There were a few guys on the mats grappling.  The place definitely smelled like sweaty man (not necessarily a bad thing).  I saw the pink door and opened it.  The room seemed so small and a couple of girls turned around to look at us.  I thought I was interrupting and quickly closed the door.  We waited until Amber came back and she told us to follow her.

It was like falling through the tree into Wonderland.  We walked into a completely different environment.  The pink door opened into a small room, which seemed to be like a warm up area.  But when you turned to the right, there was this extremely long room with tall ceilings and a bunch of poles.  There were couches set up to sit on, a fire place and cool brick walls.  There was a huge X-Pole sign on the wall.  The lights were all red.  It was no longer an MMA room.  It was a pole dancing studio.

The class was much more advanced than Rita and I -- we call ourselves Bel's special needs class.  Yes, we've been dancing for almost two years.  But we have injuries and issues and we think maybe Bel doesn't want to push us too hard so we've spent a lot of time not advancing in pole.  I think we both walked away from BeSpun wanting to fix that.  We are ready to get strong and start really dancing!
We started with a great warm-up and stretch, almost yoga-style, including some sit-ups.  Amber is a great teacher.  She describes a move, demonstrates it, then comes around to make sure everyone is doing it properly.  Rita and I went to the very end of the room so we could muddle through without getting in the way.  Amber checked on us several times.  We ended class with a free dance.  I took a few things away from the class:  First, I want to start warming up better.  Second, I learned how to climb prettier (and busted out a new move!!!).  Third, Amber (and I would assume BeSpun) absolutely believes that you should learn each move on both the right and left sides.  I currently only use my dominant hand (right) and only do moves one way.  So we spent a lot of time doing basic moves on our non-dominant side. That was pretty cool.

BeSpun was nothing like Twirly Girls.  Not to say they weren't friendly -- everyone was amazing and so nice to us.  But in class, they were very serious.  There was very little interaction between students.  They worked hard from the second they arrived until class was over.  The studio is definitely a place for people to train and become pro competitors.  Still, we had a great experience there and liked seeing how other studios worked.  Amber is an excellent teacher and she dances so beautifully.  I especially like that she is so tall (so many dancers are these tiny little things).  She's got these beautiful muscular and long legs.  Her abs look great.  She said she's been doing a lot of plyometrics, so maybe she can teach a class for us at Twirly Girls when she comes back for a visit!

So anyway, that is my first Poletry in Motion review, which will be my personal opinion of the studios I visit.  BeSpun in Hollywood is definitely a place you should check out if you're in the Southern California area.  Other than being a little star struck when you see famous instructors and dancers, their classes are well-taught and structured.  I am hoping to make more trips down to So Cal for Social Sonar and other pole events.  I am looking forward to taking another class from Amber and checking out other studios!

Oh yeah, before I go...when we left, Rita and I hit up the bathroom, which is really a big locker room/shower area for both men and women.  There were some lockers and one said, "E. Balfour."  I love the actor, Eric Balfour.  I was like, could he possibly train here??  I whipped out my cute little smart phone and typed in "Eric Balfour and Legends."  He does in fact train there (and may actually be a co-owner or investor), so I rubbed my body all over his locker (sorry, Mr. Balfour!!).  :-D  When I got home, I told Rob about it and he said that when he watched a recent episode of Haven, Eric's character did a martial arts type of move and Rob thought he pulled it off well for someone who supposedly wasn't trained in martial arts.  But now we know that he IS actually trained in martial arts.  Totally random piece of information...and gave me a good giggle because Eric Balfour is hot and I totally molested his locker!
